Trying to get the hang of this and take pictures that are actually worthy of showing. I went from a light background which was causing a lot of trouble to the exact opposite. Maybe I should try a Smith blue velvet? Guess I better hang up The Bride's little black dress before she gets home

That looks very classy to me. You have the lighting set very nicely with minimal hot spots. Great gun and beautiful stocks! Picture perfect! Bob

Naw, you need more practice. Sell me the gun and go buy some new cameras, lights, and a tripod. Wait. I have some used camera gear we can swap straight up. No questions on my part. I promise to be fair.

It is just soft enough to say either a tiny bit of camera shake, or not quite perfect focus. Use a tripod and a self timer if possible, and if possible use manual focus. Reflections of any type can fool auto-focus camera's.

Nice, but could be crisper. Not really sharp focus.
Better than most pics I see though

Flint,

Very nice use of indirect lighting. Along with the (very) slightly soft comments, if you are using Photoshop, you can drag the "curves" adjustment down just a skosh and pick-up a little more tone in the steel.
A tripod is your friend or you can shoot at a little faster shutter speed to get a darker over-all image and drag the curves up to lighten it.
All-in-all an excellent first effort on a challenging subject.

Mike

Yep guys I think it was focus problems.

Old tripod, might have some wobble to it. Priced some the other day - yikes, who would have thought they were that pricey.

Manual focus was the first attempt at going with the manual mode. Must say it looks better on my monitor in original format.

I was using a remote, but don't recall that particular shot, so with the floppy tripod I may have been holding it to properly frame the shot, which completely defeats the point of using a tripod.

May also put my lighting on a central dimmer and see what that does. Too ignorant to try messing with the Fstops...

I will try another day, closer but not exactly there yet.

Makes me smile every time I post a camera phone picture. I think it is funny how serious some of the members are about photography. More power to em. Nice gun by the way.

Thumbs up I Like It!!

Flint:

Looks to be some kind of police commemorative. Is that a "4" that I see stamped under the cylinder? Let us know a little more about it.

Here's a photo that I took of one of my 66-1's - a little scratched up... I'm also still working to get the photos on the shiny guns to be "just right". BTW - I lose quite a bit of clarity when I upload it to Photobucket.

RKmesa - Nicely engraved model you have, very nice. And yep mine is a MO State HP Comm, shot very, very little with all the extra's. And yes Photobucket is not the kindest to the photo's either. Thanks.

Re: photos of shiny guns: a middle value background works best when there are high contrasts in the gun itself; dark stocks on a nickel gun. Natural light and a VERY GOOD tripod help too. I still use a Tiltall #4602 that I bought in 1968.
