Thumbs up 40S&W for an M&P Full Size

Our son got onto a local department that carries the 40S&W M&P. I got to shoot it shortly after they issued his and was pretty impressed with it.

I need to qualify that a bit, I do not shoot striker fired handguns all that well. Give me a HAMMER TO DROP!

Well, as usual, I had to run out and get one for myself. What I noticed right away, after having a Glock 22RTF and loading for it, was that it has a fully supported chamber and standard rifling. Now, listen, that, is a win/win with this caliber.

We wanted to make a load that duplicated his carry ammo. What we settled on was a 155gr Berry's plated truncated cone bullet over a full charge of Hodgdon Longshot. Low pressure and lots of velocity!

With an OAL of 1.125", this load develops over 1250fps from his firearm. I haven't run it through the chronograph out of mine yet.

Pretty accurate as well. @ 7 yards, two handed, off hand, and shooting as fast as I could reacquire the target, I kept all 20 rounds in a paper plate sized target. I know there were times when I had 3 cases in the air at the same time. My wife was shaking her head!

Now for a mould and sizing die for my Star Magma sizer.

Just wanted to share! If you load for one, feel free to tell us your experience!

I have used a M&P40 FS in IDPA and those same bullets, but could not find the magic combination to make them as accurate as I liked. Switching to Berry's 165 grain and a moderate load of Tightgroup I got the accuracy I want, but the velocity/recoil is rather high. When that pistol is used in IDPA that is the combination I use. But, lately the M&P 9L is my IDPA darling. Next month it may be the M&P45 FS. They come in sets.

Thumbs up

The 40s&w is one of my favorite calibers to shoot. Their hard to beat, highly accurate & hit hard. What more could a shooter ask for?

My M&P .40 FS has over 15,000 rounds downrange in USPSA/IDPA matches without a hiccup ever. The load I have used that is highly accurate and is pleasant to shoot is using a 165 Montana Gold bullet with 7.5 grains of Accurate Arms #5.

Might work for you as well.......

Randy

Son #2 with his duty gun, light and all. Smith & Wesson M&P 40S&W. Load is the 155gr Longshot load mentioned in the original post.

He shot these on a recent visit to son #1's house. He is the guy in the background that is pretty impressed with the whole thing.

I know son #2's shooting ability and can attest to the fact that all of those shots are on target @ 10 yards.

It helps to have arms like a gorilla!

Love my M&P 40's, a FS and a compact. I've been using Berry's 180 gr plated with Longshot, good for 1120 from the FS. I load the 180 because I also load 10MM with the same bullet (trying to keep inventory under control). I've been considering trying a 155-165 gr bullet, your post is making me act on it. Might try loading some with WSF since its on the bench
