Can you tell the value of this Combat Masterpiece PICS
Gentlemen,
This is my first venture into the older revolvers and I have been offered this .38 but it comes without a price. Can anyone help make a fair offer? No box.
Don't be afraid to tell me I'm wasting my time.

How much are they asking? I'd pay $425ish round here for one.

In my neck of the woods I would say $400 to $500.
Good luck,

I'd say that a good ballpark firgure. If it's a Combat masterpiece and not a Model 15,the grips are later.
Looks to have quite a but of gunk around ahead of the cylinder.

No asking price. It's a "make an offer" one.

W.Penna. price; Lottsa' ole 'cop guns here. If your buying as-is [ no clean up] not even looking at the bbl. and cyl. charge holes . That gun is caked with fouling.
OFFER should be $375 & STICK TO IT.

The Combat Masterpieces are not scarce by any means although that one is fairly old and very dirty. Those are the wrong grips for a five screw gun. If you want to haggle, offer $350. If you want it outright, offer $400.

That gun may have been refinished. There seems to be a little rollmark fade and some edge rounding on the frame. Where's the turn ring on the cylinder? Yes, wrong stocks.
But it's a five-screw Pre-15 and would make a great shooter. If it is not refinished, $375-400 as others have said. If it has been refinished, then it drops in value to the basic "reliable shooter" range of $275 - 300.

David, I was going to say that too, but was afraid to stick my neck out 'cause I wasn't sure and didn't notice the no cylinder turn ring. Nice call.

If someone won't price their own goods,I'm going low.I'd hit him wth an offer of 250,and wait for the response.Who knows,it may fly,or you may have to chip in another 25.(Certainly more than any shop will offer)In any case,it sorts out those that want to move a gun, and those that want to play a pricing or haggling game.

Bought one just like that from an estate sale several years ago for $200.............Have got a $1000 worth of enjoyment out it since then.
I'd offer $250 and go up to about $375 if you really want it.

I agree with David's assessment & more!! I believe there's no doubt whatsoever it's been refinished!! The rounded over edges on the Cyl. Flutes is a dead giveaway!! It also exhibits over-polishing in some other areas as well, but the Cylinder Flute area is more pronounced than the others!!

Another thing I would factor in is that it will cost a few bucks to get nice period correct grips on her. It may or may not matter to you though. It would be a good shooter and did I say fun? I love .38's. East to reload and cheap to shoot.
Best, Rick

Why bother, with a re-finish shooter?

Durn, don't think I have ever seen so much crud, around the forcing cone.
Out of time ? Larger cylinder gap ?

The squiggle hammer makes it too old to have the factory's blessing to shoot Plus P ammo in it. I'd pass, unless you can see it in person and determine the rebluing issue and see what it'd take to clean it up.
Check timing, rifling, and other used gun factors, too.
My gut feeling is that if they want you to make an offer, there's something bad about the gun.

Unless you can get it real cheap, save your money for a better example.

It doesn't look like it has been cared for very well. What kind of condition are the bore and cylinders in? I'd look at the forcing cone fairly closely too. If there are problems there, I'd probably pass. If it looks OK, I'd probably start at 250, and wouldn't give more than 300 for it. And I'd second the opinion on the reblue, from what I can tell from the photos it just doesn't look like factory 5 screw bluing to me.

Lots of non pinned model 10s for sale at just under $300. A Combat Masterpiece with a nice set of football target should be worth that as a shooter.

I never see any non pinned model 10's for under 300 or any combat masterpiece in the condition shown for less than 400. I look everywhere I go for good, fair deals on these revolvers and never see them at the prices some of you have mentioned. The gun shown would be 425 to 450 or even higher. As a matter of a fact S&W and Colt revolvers are few and far between in our local shops and when you do encounter them they are overpriced in my opinion. I'm glad I bought the revolvers that I now have back in the day.
