My new home defense shotty
Tax refund's back, just sold my Remmy 870 Wingmaster back to a friend that sold it to me a few years back when he needed money so I started looking around for a new short barrel shotty. Black plastic, black plastic, black plastic, nothing impresses me when out of the corner of my eyes, lo and behold.
Winchester Model 12 made in 1946. Is there anything prettier than a nice piece of walnut on a blued short barreled shotty.
Maybe a speckled pup.

Looks about 2 inches longer than necessary and it's minus the 4 extra rounds you could store in a speed feed black plastic stock. Yep, it's more pretty than a Remington 870 Police Magnum with an 18" barrel and a black plastic speed feed stock and flashlight in the forestock, but then again your subject line says "home defense shotty". So....not sure if you're after form following function or function following form in home defense shotguns.

Actually you can get 6 in the tube with one in the chamber. I can always use my MP 40 if a backup is needed.

Quite the handsome shotgun. I have no doubt it will serve you well. More than capable of sorting out those "interpersonal" issues.

I should have bought one like that several years ago.
Still kicking myself because I didn't.
Do have a Model 12 in 16 gauge that my late dad bought me as a HS graduation present. Nice old bird gun. Took grouse, geese and a three-point buck with it before staring to use a 20 gauge OU.
Dad's old long-barreled Model 12 in 12 is here too. Tightest shooting
shotgun I ever fired.

A Model 12 is always a class act, but if you have a German 9MM MP40, I'd go with the sub-gun first.

Yeah, I hear you Bros....Winchester Model '97. Photo of that young Narc taken in about 1972. 18 inch barrel, beautiful walnut....and all serious business. My favorite "trunk" gun. Bought that along with a 12 Ga. Model 12 from an old detective pal for the princely sum of $300.00......eat your hearts out. LOL!
Cheers;
Lefty

Do you measure 18" from the breach to the barrel end, or from the end of an inserted shell to the barrel end? (in either case using a rod inserted down the barrel to measure)
Wood is good. It absorbs more recoil and makes a great club. I bought an 870 years ago with a plastic stock. The instructions warned against drilling a hole in the stock for a stud, because a cracked stock would not be warranteed. I drilled a hole after I removed the butt plate and found the "boss" molded in the stock for the purpose. It worked just fine but talk about cheap plastic!

A rod inserted into the muzzle parallel to barrel and to a closed bolt
Tilting to make it fit does not count.
Measure several times before you cut or take home.

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer. I'm using a double (as in a coach gun) or single barrel shotgun as an example. Am I correct in saying that a rod dropped down the barrel of a double or single would be legal with the action closed? (rod measures 18")
Thanks, Jim

Just remember the OA length with the BBL's vertical to a
parallel wall, butt on the ground has to be over 26".
I do have this imposing earlier Winchester Trench with
my Grandfathers accoutrements. He was a Cpt. in the Army Medical Corps.
WWI, trenches in Europe. Not his gun.

I just came into a Mod 97 that I'm told is a original Riot Gun. Barrel is marked CYL, but is 20 " long. It's been re-blued just fair, but is really tight. The butt plate is missing, anyone know where a replacement can be obtained?

I don't know. That's a pretty steep price for a $300 shotgun.

Just curious, but do any of you men actually go into a gun show or gun shop and ask to the man's Remmy or shotty or Winny or Mossy or Glocky.
No offense meant to anyone, but I guess I'm just afraid that if I did they'd laugh in my face and I just don't know if my fragile ego could withstand it.

It's a term of endearment. It's my shotty just like my wife is my honey. It's even meaner than my wife..........I think.

Those are some nice looking shot guns, especialy the 97's.
I was at a gun show today and was looking at some used Police trade in 870 and S&W shotguns. Had a really decent 870 in my hand but I felt $395. was a little to much when I could get something new for less.
I'm looking for something inexpensive to stow away on my motorhome.

I Shot M-12s for several years in ATA competition and saw many others shoot them too,no major malfunctions. Remember if you hold the trigger back and pump in the next round it will go off on lock-up.
good thing to know if intentional , bad news by accident.
