Potential 10-5 purchase
Hey folks, first post here so let's see how it goes.
I have the possibility of buying a 4" pencil barrel 10-5. Seller says it's dated to 69-70. Photos appear to be in pretty mint condition. Firmly asking $400 with S&W leather holster and a box of .38 ammo. Seem like a fair asking price? Serial # D2941xx

It's about $50 high, but the extras will bring it up close.
Looks like a great example in great condition.

The gun looks to be in great shape but I also think it's a good 50.00
too high. Is the seller an individual or a gun shop? Shops sometimes try to pair up items that didn't come in together to increase selling
prices. Is anyone else looking at the gun? The holster and ammo
aren't worth 50.00 in my opinion so if the gun is at a gun shop I'd
suggest you pull out your wad of cash and offer 350.00 and tell
the seller to keep the holster and ammo.

If you like it, buy it. I would'nt lose a minty model 10 over 50 bucks but thats just me. Good luck on your decision.

+1
Model 10's are "a dime a dozen."
Model 10's in that condition are not.

That looks to be in very nice condition. I also think it's alittle high but you really don't see too many that look that good so if you want a 10 you'd have a hard time finding one better.

Looks to be in really good shape for a forty year old revolver. Was it reblued? Are the grips original? As others have said, its a nice specimen and I wouldn't feel bad if I paid $400 out the door if everything was original.

I bought a mint 4 inch Model 10-5 about 6 months ago for $375 and I wouldn't have walked away for an extra $25. My dealer and I do a lot of business and I asked him if he could do better on the price. He said no because I don't get pristine ones like this very often anymore.

A 4" Model 10 isn't a rare gun. They made literally millions of them. To me $400 would be a lot to pay for a Model 10 but I guess that's pretty much the going rate these days. You have to decide.

It's a great gun and example of the way they used to be. Buy it or you'll wish you did later. Mine is a joy to shoot makes me look like a better shot than I really am.

I picked up one very close to that one for $265 in Billings about 6 years ago and was happy to get it. It had a bit of muzzle wear and a nick on the side of the cylinder. Nice shooter and pretty.
As mentioned, lots of Model 10s out there. Not so many that look like that one though.

Buy the gun. IMO, that is a good price, at least where I'm at. Anyone that says it is $50 too high is looking at the SC of S&W 3rd edition which is 6 years old. If anyone of you has one that looks like that one, sell it to me for $350.
Gun show prices are nuts, gun store prices are close to nuts, the only way I see getting a good deal on any used S&W revolver is from someone who does not know what they have.
JMHO,
Greg

Model 10-5
I think that we are all working in a vacuum. The original poster does not tell us where he is. I am in Southern California and the last Model 10-5 I saw here locally was $395 and it wasn’t in anywhere near as nice shape that this specimen is. Then I saw a kinda rough Model 10-7 with Target grips for $485.
If I saw that Model 10 here in SoCal for $400 I’d think it was a very good deal.

I really appreciate everyone's responses here...and I ended up with a very near new looking S&W. She really is a beauty in person. Almost makes me not want to shoot it. I've never been that type of guy to buy something and not use it so we'll have to see.
This was a GA purchase and admittedly, in the last several weeks I have seen several other 10's & 15's that were no where near this condition and only $20-30 less. I'm very happy with my decision so far.
Thank you all very much for your input and I'm very much enjoying this forum and it's information.

One of the guns that dragged me into this was a VERY nice 10-7 in a local shop. The gun looked to my untrained eye to be in NIB condition. It had the original box, papers, tools, etc. They were asking $425.00 for it a year or so ago. I was so new to this I didn't even know to make a lower offer.
So, I probably "paid too much" for it then. I wouldn't sell it for that today, even though I've learned enough to spot a couple of small flaws in it. It is still a VERY nice gun.
Enjoy yours. Post pictures.
And welcome aboard.

It only matters what it's worth to you.Everyone who says it's priced a little high is most likely correct as far as true intrinsic value, but that gun looks new to me.I'd plop down four smackers for it in a heartbeat.
When I found my 2 inch Mod.10-5,it was,and still is pristine also. It was $400 and I didn't even haggle.I'd been looking for one that good for a long time.
The 4 inchers are great utility guns.

The model 10 is the cornerstone of Smith and Wesson revolvers.
Model 10's have been carried by more police officers and defended more homes and families than any other handgun in history, more than likely.
A wise choice.

Sure is nice! If you're not in the middle of dealing for
something else, how can you go wrong?
If you tried to buy a new gun of that quality, you'd be
making a deposit only, for that price. JMHO, TACC1

Funny you should ask; I picked up this 10-5 yesterday for $300 OTD at the local pawn shop. He was asking $349. I know it had been sitting there for a month or two. I offered $300 OTD and he said OK.
There's not a scratch, mark nor any wear anywhere on this fine S&W. Honestly, I might have bought it for $349 plus tax and not felt any better or worse about the deal.\
Edit: I will add that I thought about buying this one for a month. I kept looking on the internet, stores, etc at other guns but this one kept calling me. I compared the price of this to any new, or other used, shooter grade S&W .38 and this one just kept looking like the better deal by $200-$300 bucks. BUT, this one is better than the new ones, IMHO, has better balance, is in 'like new' condition, no lock, no MIM, no nothing - just a proven, honest S&W that I could EASILY get my investment back out of on a moments notice! For 300 beans I'm ECSTATIC...
I'm going to take some better pics tonight and post them...

Congrats! It's a beautiful revolver.
I bought one several months ago in nearly the same shape. Pristine. Only difference is mine has Uncle Mikes grips with finger grooves. Great for shooting but I love the look of the walnut grips.
Best of all, it's a sweet shooting 38 with that wonderful S&W trigger.
Enjoy shooting yours. I surely have enjoyed mine.

Dan, it turns out that it even has the original matching number grips! I was quite happy about that. I've been thinking about putting on some aftermarket grips for shooting comfort and also to maintain the quality of the OEM grips. Do you know a stock/model # of your Uncle Mikes grips?

I really like that Tyler-T grip on yours. I'm going to order one of those for mine. Question: That is the 'shiny black' type - correct? It sure looks shiny to me, anyhow, I want that exact same thing and want to make sure I order correctly.

Skip...not really good at posting pics. Hope this works. This is a ****** cell phone pic of my 10-5. Nevertheless.....
The Uncle Mikes are #59005 and fit K and L frames, Square Butt.
Really comfy for shooting. But I sure love the look of wood against the blued metal. Keeping my eye out on eBay for some wood target grips. Just because this 40 year old classic is so pretty!
Oh...and do shoot it. Often! You'll love it.
Dan

Yes, that is the shiny black one. I think they look great on these older guns.
