Altamont grips. Threads gone when you...
try to tighten them, which you have to do because they are not snug fit. Screws too long anyway. Really disappointed. They would have come lose anyway after shooting. They were advertised as k-frame and they look great, but very disappointed. Back to ugly pachmyer rubber grips on my new 66-2. Will see what kind of customer service they really have (they were responsive informing me my original choice was unavailable). I think I will just go w/ magna's from midway or target grips ($70). Thanks Altamont the price of this revolver is just going up and up.

screws came w/ the gun. it was never snug...
regardless of the screws, which were too long. the rubber pachmyers are a great feel but just can leave them on a smith stainless.

I have a pair of Altamonts on my M65 and used the screw that came with the grips.
If I read the OP correctly he used the screw "that came with the gun", which may or may not be why the threads stripped in the grips.

I just installed a set of Altamont stocks on my 66-1 snubbie and they fit perfect and the screw was the right length. However, I did try to use a silver (looking) screw from a set of Ahrends, but it was about an 1/8" too long. I'll just live with the black screw. Contact Altamont. I bet they will help you with the issue!

Each of my Altamont grips I have bought direct from them came with three different length screws and the grips were a near perfect fit. I just ordered a set of their round butt magnas, I want to order another of their square butt magnas, and I love that they just added a whole bunch of new options to the K frame round butt selection. They also have a new grip checkering option for the J round butt boot grip that has me really tempted to buy one. But then I would need another J frame... Darn the luck.

+1, the grips include 3 different screws to allow for variance in the width of the grip frame.
I have a set of the RB "magnas" on a 10-14 and I love them, also have a set of their bonded Ivory N-frame square grips and out of the 3 screws, found one that fit perfect.
If you used another screw in the Altamont grips, you probably stripped the threads out. Altamont uses brass for the escutcheons.

I've purchased 2 sets of Altamont Grips over the last few months and the first set, which were for a J Frame, came with 3 screws but they were all too long.
I contacted Altamont and they sent me 2 or three more, which were also too long so I had to improvise.
The other set I got, this time for a K, also came with 3 screws and the shortest one almost sticks too far out the other side of the grip when snugged down.

I just got a set of Round Butt grips from them for my 686-6 and the fit was great. Also came with 3 screws and the shortest one fit fine. The only thing I don't like is the flat spots where the grips meet the backstrap. Seems to me they should be rounded to the strap not flat.

well its a wood grip so its not like there all going to be perfect.
I'd look at it that way and contact them about it, give them a shot to rectify it.

I ordered a set of j frame grips directly from altamont about a month ago, when I got them the brass insert the screw threads into was stripped. I emailed altamont and had a replacement set of grips at my door within 3 days, with a return label for the defective grips. They also came with 3 different lengths of screws to choose from. Altamont has excellent customer service in my opinion. I would definately order more grips from them.

I have never tried any of Altamont's S&W grips, but I have purchased dozens of sets for Colt Pythons and Rugers. I usually don't have any issues with them (and I love the way they look and feel), but every once in a while I will get a set that the screw will not thread into. I simply send it back and Altamont sends me a new set.

I have four pairs of Alamont grips for Smith revolvers. My favorite is the ivory polymer style against a stainless N frame.
Email response from Altamont has been spotty for me, but telephone service has been great.

I have many Altamont grips and just received two of their newer just this week. There grips are composite and therefore not soft like wood. Their specifications are exact. My experience has always found the fit to be the metal flashing(high spots) on the frame. You can feel it with you finger nail.
Get rid of it and they will fit perfectly!

I've bought a number of grips from Altamont, and I've always been pleased with them.
An example of their customer service (or at least my experience with them): I bought a set of grips for one of my 1911s, and made a mistake in ordering a set that were not cut for an ambi-safety. I decided to try to make a cutout myself, and it turned out pretty good, if I do say so...but, there was one little place on the edge of the grip where it didn't turn out so well. No one else may have ever noticed it, but it bugged me.
I contacted Altamont and asked if they would sell me just the RH grip, and not a whole new pair. They asked why, and I explained what I had done. They said to send them back, and they would send me the right set. I told them it was my mistake in ordering the wrong pair, and then further by trying to cut them myself. They again said to send them back, and they would send me a new set. NO CHARGE!
That to me is excellent customer service.

Grips mailed back last week and received by Altamont.
No refund as of today. Went w/ the Smith dymandwood grips, that are small for my 66 but at least i can expect them to fit and work.

Maybe I'm being a little dense here, however when I encounter a grip screw that is just slightly too long, I carefully file down the threaded end. I'm not seeing why others can't do the same thing.
I have several sets of Altamont grips, all came with three screws and one J frame boot set, the shortest was about 1/16th an inch too long. Five minutes with a mini file and it is just fine. Guess I should have called Altamont and made a big issue of it....
Too short a screw is a real problem, a little too long just needs some 'fitting'.

That's what I ended up doing but felt that if ordering a set of grips made for a specific model then I should be able to put them on that specific model of gun without modification, especially when it comes to something as straightforward as screw length.
In my case, I ended up with 5 or 6 screws that Altamont sent me and all of them were too long. You would think I / they would have got lucky on at least one of them.
Actually I do consider myself lucky. Now I have some spare screws that I can fit as needed.

The truism that l've observed is that the more Smiths l acquire the faster my grip collection grows... and the screws seem to multiply exponentially! Maybe l just need to look for more guns!

I have a set of Altamonts for a SB K-Frame (magnas), and really like the checkering and look (super walnut). However, they were a bit small and actually expose a bit of frame around the edges of the grips, which you can only really see in bright light. They will basically fall off with no screw, where as stock grips require a small amount of effort to remove, (which I would prefer). My screw was also a bit long, as was the screw that came from S&W for my service grips (magnas). I put a file on it and some cold blue and it looked like stock, but I agree with others that it should come the right length. I didn't ask Ahrend's, but I couldn't help but wonder if they (and S&W) do that intentionally so that you can custom the length yourself; both were so long, they would have bitten into my palm. I had purchased two sets of the S&Ws and they were both like that. I really like the Altamonts, but am concerned with wear on the frame that the wood doesn't cover. I also had a set of Altamonts for an L-frame RB and they also looked great but had those flat spots mentioned. Some 620 grit sandpaper and 0000 steel wool, and a little oil rounded them out easily and nicely, but they just never fit my hand right. I switched to Ahrend's and have never looked back.

Any suggestions for holding that darn little screw when you file off about 1/16-1/8 inch?

Holding the file in your weak hand, the screw in your strong hand, rub the screw against the file not the file against the screw. If you can't do that then your file is too coarse.

Have at least 8 pairs of Altamont grips, fit and finish are precise and handsome, had one problem, (order mixup) called Doug, fixed. Very good product. Shortening a screw is too easy to complain about.

I really recommend you use a padded vise; a small one will do. It makes it easier and also makes for a more even file. Make sure you use the file correctly; long even strokes away from you. A little B/C blue afterward and it looks like factory.

Thanks for the file suggestions. Think I'll use the padded vice.

Go to the hardware store and find a nut that fits. Run the nut down before you begin filing. When finished take the nut off and it will straighten out any boogered threads from putting the screw in a vice and filing on it.

I think altamont grips would look great on the wall. I want something to take to the range on a regular basis.
