Default Favorite Cartoon Character

in 1960 I was pretty addicted to Mighty Mouse, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Atom Ant, Fearless Fly, Peter Potamus, Huckleberry Hound, etc. When ol' Fearless lost his glasses it was cryptonite to Superman.

Anybody remember their childhood favorites?

Rocky and Bullwinkle are fantastic, but the Duck can't be beat, especially the early stuff......

I loved Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner the best but Yosemite Sam was right behind it, and the rarely seen Pete Puma.

Anything by Warner Brothers. I liked the early Popeyes, too, and wonder if his spinach was grown next to a meth lab or a nuclear power plant. And were those all Olive Oye's kids that looked exactly like "Uncle Popeye"? I also really liked Johnny Quest because he was like a real kid who got to fight monsters.

Felix the Cat. I liked the name so much I named a cat Felix. Then the cat died, so I thought about giving the name to my son.

My MIL was a southern belle. She still sounded like it even though she had lived in Duluth for 47 years. Once she asked me: "What are you gonna cawl it?"

"If it's a boy, we'll call him Felix."

"Ah don't lahk Felix."

"Second choice is LeRoy."

"Ah think ah lahk Felix bettah."

But she still didn't like it that much. She used his middle name for the birth announcement in the local paper. I had to make her print a correction.

I had given him a more conventional middle that he could cop to if his name ever became a problem for him, but Felix wears his name with pride. "So did your dad name you after Felix Frankfurter?"
"Nope."

His first tattoo was Felix the Cat, carrying a lit bomb. He was about 17. The first time I saw it, I started laughing.

He said, "I thought you might react that way. Hey, you never told me not to." Quite so. When he was thirteen, he had wanted to get an ear pierced. I said I didn't care what he did when he turned eighteen, but there would be no gratuitous holes in his body on my watch. "At least I didn't get my **** pierced." He had a point.

"Now, you need to be aware that every one of these tattoos could appear as an identifying characteristic on your rap sheet."

"I have no plans to earn a rap sheet."

"Perhaps, but you never know who could be in charge in ten or twenty years."

One point for me. I'm thinking my grandson will not have tattoos.

Pete Puma was hilarious.
"I'm the little fellers Mother, and I was so WOOORRRRIIEDDDDD about him!!!!!!"
My Wife and I still love that one. We both grew up watching Bugs Bunny, so he's probably our favorite.

Also the original (1969, 1970) Scooby Doo from Scooby Doo, where are you?

They don't make 'em like that any more.

Yeah, that was pretty weird. I think I'll look Clutch up on you tube. do you mean Space Ghost? I think he was a regular cartoon. For being drawn so bad I still kinda liked that cartoon. I also like how Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumlee would visit professor Phineus J. Whoopy who would always solve a real science problem on the show.

I believe Pete Puma's voice was the same as Crazy Guggenheim's from the Jackie Gleason Show.

Anything from Warner Brothers by Chuck Jones. The musical score was amazing. He was once asked why he used classical music. His reply? Because it's the best music.

But I do have a soft spot for Droopy.

Couldn't do Mr. McGoo now. Too insensitive to the visually impaired. Same with Speedy Gonzalez and Quick Draw McGraw's little sidekick. Chip n' Dale were pioneers in television, though, as probably the first domestic partners on TV, even predating Burt and Ernie. Bugs had a penchant for crossdressing. Porky Pig actually was benificial, giving those with speech impedda...impedda...speech problems, much needed confidence.

Rocky & Bulwinkle and Mr. Peabody, if I recall the name.

Of comics characters, Modesty Blaise, who also appeared in excellent novels. Only one US newspaper carried the Blaise strip, which was pretty racy for US audiences. It's worth Searching for Modesty.

There are bound volumes of the collected comics, sold as "graphic novels", I guess. The author retired in 1996, killing off Modesty in a final book, "The Cobra Trap."

At a rather young age I remember the cartoons from the 30's and 40's. What was not to like about Betty Boop and her friends. The professor who would put on his thinking cap when he or Betty would run into trouble. many of the early cartoons were silent for the most part and the chacters were sort of humanized farm animals.

I also liked Popeye, Bugs, Foghorn Leghorn, Road Runner and others.

Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, Top Cat, Jinx and Pixie and Dixie and Quick Draw McGraw, and Peppy Le Pew, the poor skunk who only wanted someone to love; Beany and Cecil-which I would love to see now as an adult and actually know what they were really talking about-and the usual lineup on Saturday morning with Mighty Mouse, Bugs, etc.,. That's all, Folks.

Pete Puma was good. The ones where Bugs was being stalked by Wile E. Coyote,(genius) were good.

Also the little mouse named Sniffles, with his friend the worm was good.
