The Floating J Serial Numbers
I have read about the floating J. makes it harder for a novice like me to decide on when an earlier Model 49 no dash was made. Serial number reads 4J27xx.
Any idea when it was made? Can post pictures if needed.

Almost certainly dates to 1971 rather than '72.

The only time a numeral higher than 1 can preceed the J is during 1971-1972. As Goony said, it really has to be a 1971 gun.
