I don't drink like I once did, so I stick to stuff I like. Single malt scotch has been my drink for better than a decade. BUT, this past weekend I had a martini on the rocks and I liked it! Please give me some pointers on what is a good gin. Thanks.

No help from me............my first really bad college drunk was on Gin. Don't know what kind but it was a half gallon bottle from Mexico with a key chain with a little black bear around the neck. I couldn't walk by a Juniper bush for years without feeling like I was going to toss my cookies. Still can't do Gin. Keep shootin' and check 6

Well, we just had a thread about gin, particularly about Hendricks brand, which seems to be held in high regard. Other quality brands are Beefeaters, and Bombay, of which there are two variations, "regular", and "Saphhire", the latter being more "aromatic" evidently as the result of spices or etc., and not to my liking. There are probably other fine commercial brands as well. There's a small distillery in Milwaukee, if memory serves, that gets very high marks for its product.

ETA --- Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee, and its Rehorst brand was what I was thinking of...

Hendricks for me - I've had other frou-frou gins, and that's the one I keep in stock. (Sapphire is our mixing gin around here.)

That was Oso Negro brand, stands for black bear. It was a standard brand for just about everything coming out of Mexico for years. Pretty ugly stuff.

Well, it is and it probably doesn't give as bad a hangover but I really do like the taste of Hendricks. The aromatics are wonderful. instead of doing your martini on the rocks, chill it in a coctail shaker and drink out of a real martini glass. I like a dirty 'tini (add a little olive brine to it-don't go overboard).
But be careful-gin sneaks up on you and unleashes your super powers far sooner than single malt does After that happens, you're on your own!

My favorite martini is Bombay on the rocks. Bombay Sapphire is 100 proof, more akin to opening up a vein, so that's what I usually order.

I am mostly an irish whiskey guy, but I agree, Hendricks is a very good gin. I like it with soda, not tonic, and a couple limes. Its also really good with some muddled cucumber, simple syrup, and a sugared rim.

Coming from one who is soley a martini drinker since college 30 years ago you need to buy Brokers Gin (the bottle will have a little "top hat" on the cap) and Martini and Rossi Dry Vermouth (the smaller bottle). Ig you cannot find Brokers than go with Beefeaters. Go three ounces of gin and 1/2 cap of vermouth and an olive (a Martini), onion (a Gibson) or about any other pickled thing with spicey okra and green beans being particular favorites. As it is a holiday today here in Kazakhstan and just turning 6:00 PM I do believe I will go pour one. Oh, one more thing, go easy as they do creep up on you as they are darn efficient. ;-)

Actually, the hat is a little bowler. And yes, for the money Brokers Gin is very good indeed.
