My First N-Frame!
I'm getting this 3.5" Model 27-2 this week from a friend. Just wanted to share some photos of my newest acquisition, it seems to have some left handed target grips on it, wondered if anyone knew anything about them. S/N is N608268 so I'm guessing 1980 manufacture?

Those look to be right hand stocks to me. 1980 seems correct.

Gunfish,
My understanding of thumbrest stocks is the panel with the rest on it should be on the opposite side of the shooters hand hold. (i.e. right hand shooters have the thumb rest on the left hand panel and vice versa) The thumbrest is on the right hand grip in this case which indicates optimization for a left handed hold correct?

Yes, on target stocks, the thumb rest will be on the left grip for a right handed shooter. But that does not look like a thumb rest to me in the picture. It looks more like a guide for the trigger finger. Maybe it's just the angle of the picture.

Nice score. Interesting grips, I'd have to agree that it doesn't appear to be a thumbrest on the right hand panel. They are very intriguing, some more pics might help to identify the maker, especially showing from behind and above, and the underside of the grips too. Any chance your friend that you got the gun from knows their story?

He didn't tell me much about the gun, just knew I was a big Smith fan, he's a Colt guy so he knew little to nothing about it. When he first told me about it he said it was a 2.5 inch model 19 haha. I'm supposed to get it from him thursday and will get more pics and info.

What a great way to start down the N-Frame path. It's just the gun every Model 27 enthusiast is looking for.

Gongrats on the new 27! I have little doubt you'll be able to hand it down to your grandkids if you so desire. The grips are interesting, let us know if you find a makers mark on them somewhere....if you don't care for them you can always replace them with a set of period correct Magnas or Targets, or with a set of Patrick Grashorns elk antler grips.

I was stoked when I got the pics he sent me of the gun. If I find any markings on the grips I'll post them and keep updated. They look like a fairly high grade of walnut to me, but I'm still confused as to their proposed function.

finally
Hey All,
Well I finally got this one after waiting on guy for sometime. He was always busy anyway Ive attached a few pics, and got a look inside the grips. They appear very crude inside, like handmade by bubba lol. The only markings I could find were faint stampings of RHC. They fit the hand great, leave the back strap partially exposed but have a large gap near the top. Anyway just wanted to give an update.
Regards, Jesse

I really like those grips. I don't recognize the maker. I was thinking Sanderson when you posted the first pictures, but no numbers inside, checkering borders aren't right, and I've never seen any of his grips with the screw hole plugged. That plugged screw hole was pretty common with the California makers, and even Spegel up in Oregon. But the style and checkering pattern doesn't really look like any of theirs. They have a definite Herrett look (quality of their upper end wood, and checkering pattern), but again I've never known them to plug the hole either. These clearly weren't bought off a shelf, someone had these made to their hand. I'd love to see a shot of the grips on the gun from behind. I'm still having a hard time picturing the finger rest on the right panel. From the pictures the stamping looks like RHN, can you verify that? Very interesting, hopefully someone can come up with an idea of who made them.
Oh yeah, and that's a pretty nice "entry" N Frame too.

Nice 27! Of course you already knew that. Those grips are sure interesting too. I have a set of actual thumb rest grips for my 6" 28 no dash. Don't really care for the look, but make they me shoot it better. Enjoy your 27! Bob

Bob,
I appreciate the compliment. I actually carried it as opposed to my 3" 65 when I went walking and it's not a terrible packing pistol!

So you START your N frame collection with a 3 1/2" 27. Good for you!

Lenny,
It seemed like such a good place when one considers that it is the shortest traditional factory barrel length offered on the frame! I'm 25 and I figure as I age I can get longer barrel variants as well as larger bores. On a more serious note though, the bigger bores are pricy unless one reloads and with law school and my son I don't have alot of me time these days.

Jesse,
So now you're telling me you've managed a 31/2" 27 and you are only 25! Double good for you. Good luck with school and enjoy your boy it goes fast.

Lenny,
I have always had a thing for revolvers since I was a boy. My 27 is the 6th revolver I've owned, 3 of which I still have. Thank you for the well wishes, and I can say it really does go fast, seems like yesterday he was a helpless infant and now he toddles all over the place!
Regards, Jesse

Congrats on the nice Model 27. You will love it.
Those grips kinda overpower the gun don't they?
Get you a nice set of faux Ivories or some Stags that
fit it well and have fun shooting the heck out of it.
Chuck

Chuck,
They do overpower it being the short barrel and all. I plan to get magnas and a t grip for it.

For ccw I prefer the pachmayers presentation rubber grips because I can sink my fingers into the rubber.
Now since I'm retired the accountant wife likes the real wood grain look.
Since she never says a word about what I do with my mad money I agree with her and keep the real wood on. Like Phil the dad on duck dynasty says just say yup in front of them then do what you want when they leave.
My 357 snubbed tiger has the rubber grips.
Are they Herrets?
I had a custom make set of herret grips made to the exact size of my hand. There awesome(ruger). There combat finger groove grips.
