Default Listening to Cousin Bruce on XM

Over 50 years on the radio
I grew up with the Cuz in NY in the 60's.
Here is a letter he sent me over 50 years ago. Looks like the insects enjoyed it too.
Chime in if you also grew up with the Cuz.

Default Not Me

I signed up for XM for the music. I don't want to listen to anyone ratchet on when there could be a tune playing. Also don't like the DJ's that clutter up the airways in the morning. Just MNSHO,

Me too.

I realize that Cousin Brucie is sort of iconic, but I can't stand his irritating, yankee voice. I listen to the "60s on 6" channel, but I have been known to turn to the 50s channel or a country channel when he comes on.

Is it a rerun or is that ol' boy still alive? Used to pick him up in southern Virginia in the late '60s. (Broadcast was outta Boston, for those who don't know.)

If he is still alive, he must be getting' a bit long in the tooth.

I'm with you. I'd never heard of this cat until Davey Jones died. That show was enough to cure me of ever listening to him again. He is now an "inside joke" between my wife and I, and an immediate call to switch to "Willies Roadhouse."

Talking

Some of our members may not be old enough to remember that once upon a time, AM radio was the only game in town for most of us. If you travelled, you also would have observed that the genre varied depending upon where you were. Until one day, along came Rock n' Roll and everything began to change. In some places, sooner than others. Regional attitudes and musical interests generally set the standard for the type of music a particular station aired.

That was more the result of a mixture of reaching for the advertising dollars by appealing to the demographics, i.e. the kids who bought records...you do remember vinyl records, dontcha'?

Yeah Bruce Morrow was iconic in NYC during the 60's when AM pop music was the fare of the day. When the 50's Rock 'n Roll, doo wop stuff faded and the "British Invasion" began with the Beatles, WABC and WMCA ("The Good Guys') were the clear radio market leaders. Other AM stations like WNEW played to an older generation and sometime in the early 70's I remember WHN who capitilized on the country music genre of the day.

When FM rocked out with WNEW FM, it sounded the death knoll for the AM stations. They didn't constantly repeat the same top 40 like the AM stations always did. Their format was very diversified compared with AM radio programs. Today, they have suffered the same fate and commercial radio in general....sucks, cause it's one big commercial.

Cheers;
Lefty

Yep that was the original FM claim to fame, very little advertizing. Now it is as bad or worse than AM. Heck they do not even announce the name of the songs or artist.

My wife's new car has free XM for a while. I love it but not enough to pay for it when it expires.

I bought a new home AV receiver and no place of a analog turntable to plug in. I need to get a pre amp to play my Vinyl. (large plastic record discs with music on them)

Cousin Bruce and his competition over at WINS - Murray The K were two of the most popular dj's in NY. Murray The K was known as the Fifth Beatle.
They were all fighting for ratings, including WMCA and their Good Guys.

The Individual Good Guys

WABC Silver Dollar Sound Survey

Survey for week ending Dec. 23, 1961

I was a big fan of radio in the "early days" and have great memories of all those great dj's, listening on my little transistor radio held up to my ear as battery power faded.
I know a lot of members are too young to remember these "beginnings", but here we are 50 years later and the memories linger (at least for some of us).

As an old Brooklyn boy growing up in the fifties and sixties, Cousin Bruce and Murray the K were the guys to listen to.

I wore Thom McCan's and Keds and P.F. Flyers too and when I was little, I wore Buster Brown's.

Herb Oscar Anderson, on the H. O. A. show was "the morning mayor of New York. Dan Ingram was "Dandy Dan Ingram. Scott Muni was "Scottso on your radio and Bruce Morrow was "your cuz, cousin Brucie".

Yes, the Cuz yet lives. he is about seventy-five years old. A friend of the family was a former executive of RKO-General radio, WOR in New York who retired and started a business as a broker of radio stations and their markets. He sold Morrow his first station in what became a local chain of stations called the "Stillman-Morrow Group".

Boy, that Top 40 list brings back lots of memories, I remember so many of them. My Sister who was a few years older always had them playing so I got a jump start on a lot of those songs.

Where is one of my favorites, Runaway, Del Shannon??

I believe Scott Muni became the program manager on WNEW FM. He had a very deep distinctive voice.

Just tell them "It's a nice radio feature, but not worth it to me". They will pass you to a supervisor who will lower the cost to about $8.00 per month... 3 years in a row...
