Thumbs up Having M&P22 troubles?

I have been reading here about some folks having issues with their new M&P22s. Have faith, this may be a short term problem. I was extremely disappointed when I experienced multiple failures to feed, stove pipes and jams. I could not run a whole magazine without at least one of these incidents, usually several. Federal bulk is my favorite target, plinking load and it was severely bad. Other ammo worked, but still with problems. CCI was good but too expensive for the amount of shooting I do. Frustration reigned and after the glowing reviews I read here, I felt almost cursed with this gun. I was using Gun Slick slide grease, a product that has never failed me, to lube the gun. After reading a post here, I started using 30w Synthetic motor oil. I also polished the feed ramp (probably not necessary as most my problems were fail to feed). It seems the slide was not fully cycling as to pick up the next round. There was a suggestion that the recoil spring could be a little stiff and not cycle well with some ammo. I did not change or alter that. The new lube plus the 1500 or so break in/testing rounds seems to have solved the problem. This process took about a month. This gun just plain runs now. Even the horrible (in this case) Federal works like a charm. I am one happy camper, this gun is so much fun to shoot I can't hardly put it down. So take heart those of you with M&P22 issues, they will probably clear up. I hope this encourages those of you that are having troubles. Happy shooting.

I agree with you that things should work out. I was able to shoot most ammo brands without issue in mine from day one. Then started getting a few Fail to Feed jams after about 300 rounds. I found the problems was a bent recoil guide rod. S&W sent me a new spring, buffer and rod. No more problems in 1000 rounds. It likes CCI mini mags best but will run any other brand so far. I did polish the feed ramp a little but I don't know if that helped. Gun is too much fun. I hope we don't wear it out. My M&P9 is feeling neglected. I only shoot about a third the rounds through that at the range.

I have had very few "breakin problems" with my M&P22. I have been using it regurally for the past few weeks and it seems to function fine. I shoot Fed. value pack exclusively and it tends to function well in all my .22's. I do get an occasional fail to feed in several of my .22's that I attribute to the odd weak federal round.

Mine just broke the 1,000 round mark, with nary a single malfunction... feeding, ejection, locking open on last round... perfect performance! I love this gun.
That is spite of over 600 rounds being that wretched CCI Blazer that I made the mistake of buying two bricks of... smokes like it was loaded with black powder, and leads so badly that any ammo savings were lost in expense of bore brushes. Boy, did I learn a lesson on that stuff!
So, that makes the gun's performance all the more impressive. They really seem to have gotten these right.

I have had no issues whatsoever with my M&P 22.

From owning other .22lr firearms, I expect to have some issues during break in. I brought along 300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags with me to the range to break in my M&P 22.

I shot 100 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag with no issue, and went right to Winchester 550 bulk. No problems whatsoever.

I fired about 1,750 - 2,000 rounds through mine. All but 100 rounds were inexpensive bulk pack ammo.

Hello all, first post here. I just got back from the range with my new M&P22 and it ran flawless in the 325 rounds I shot through it today. I used Federal "Target Grade" bulk pack ammo, didnt try anything else. My only gripe with the gun is I hate the rear sights. I would like to find a replacement if possible asap.

There's another thread out here on that topic.

I contacted S&W support looing for a 2 dot rear sight similar to the M&P9's. S&W support said they do not have any alternative rear sights for the M&P 22. They also cautioned that installing a steel rear sight can damage the aluminum frame.

I was at the range today also with my M&P 22. I told the rangemaster I actually shoot better with my wifes Walther P22 because I can see the 3dot sights. He suggested either changing pistols (not gonna happen) or paint some dots on the back sight. I got home and after cleaning it I took some white fingernail polish I had in my fly tying supplies box and put some on. I'll let you all know how it works next time I get to shoot but just aiming practice in the house the rear is much easier for me to pick up now.

Yes .. Do what I did and speak with a S&W TECH, not CS. Ask them for the updated two dot rear sight to replace the solid black one that you have. I was sent a two dot rear sight FREE, and it is very simple to swap out.

I ran about 350 rounds of CCI Tactical through mine and then tried Federal Bulk. In the 108 rounds of Federal, I had 6 FTEs and 4 FTLs. Back to CCI for 2 mag fulls with no problems. Guess she will loosen up eventually. I hope so because I have 1500 rounds of Fed Bulk I have to do something with.

Hayden.

I know its not a target gun but there is just too much day light for me between the rear and front sight so im wanting something that has a narrower notch.

I just called them and was told they do not offer a two dot rear sight. Do you have any advice on how to obtain this?

Unclestuart77 I was told the same thing and also they do not sell an add on thumb saftey kit for M&P pistols that came without. These two items are like finding a sasquatch and the chupacabra. People say they exist but so far ive seen no evidence.

isaidme1,

KRIS7047th was probably send a steel sight meant for the bigger guns. I need more time to look into this and I will let you know what I find. I am sure the company will not stand behind mounting a steel sight on an aluminum frame. Walther is my next contact, talk soon.

Walther is a good place to try and if there is a contact for Umarex the people that actually make these guns for S&W they might know something.

My experience has been slightly different from what most of you have described.

When my 22 was at about 200 rounds fired, the slide started sticking partly open and stay stuck until I either shoved it closed, or unloaded, cleared, and fiddled for a while. Even starting completely unloaded, I could rack the slide a few times and get it to stick partway open. This was my first firearm ever, so I was worried when the guy at the range couldn't figure it out either. After a while he dabbed some axle grease (!!) in some strategic spots with a Q-tip, and the problem disappeared. I fired another 50 rounds or so with no issues. I went home, cleaned the gun, lubed it liberally with oil, and the very next trip to the range it jammed up again. I sent the gun to S&W for repair, but when it came back (having been "de-burred" according to the tech) it still stuck.

I have spent hours staring at every surface of the innards trying to figure this out. The best I can tell (and this is just a theory), the frame on my pistol seems to be tilted slightly upward toward the front, so that the frame and barrel are slightly closer together there than at the breach. This causes the slide to scrape the bottom of the barrel where the muzzle passes through the hole on the front of the slide. Oiling the outside of the barrel helps, but the gun is much happier with some kind of grease on this spot. Since adding Remington white grease to my post-cleaning routine and firing another 600-800 rounds, the slide only drags slightly, and no longer jams open.

I have not heard of anyone else having this problem with their M&P 22s. I am tempted to take a Dremel to the bottom of the muzzle opening on the slide, but don't really want to take off the anodized finish there (at least, not any more than the wear that is already occurring).

In my specific case, ammo selection has not made any difference... but I must say that firing CCI Mini-Mag (40 grain solid) is =tons= more fun than shooting the cheap stuff! It kicks noticeably harder, burps a much brighter muzzle flash, and makes the whole process far more interesting. Highly recommended!

Cheers

I do have problems with mine after about 200rounds each range session. It starts FTF. I contribute it to the fact the 22lr is dirty as h@ll and the gun starts to dry up oil wise. Im going to start taking oil with me to the range and lubing it back up and see if it helps.

You might just try buffing/polishing that spot on your slide. Shouldn't hurt and just might help. Remember a little can go a long ways.
