Default PTSD information?

Spent most of the day looking for information on PTS. Spoke with mom last night worried about dad. He doesn't usually goto the dr let alone VA but I guess he got really stressed out at work then a period of time he can't account for. So he went to VA and is talking to someone. Good step in right direction. Just wondering how to be of help. Pops is in his 70 Vietnam vet and he told her the yelling going around him just set him off. Sorry for rambling thread, just concerned for the man has been my hero and example of my life.

Default Just your support

Just your knowing and supporting is helpful. There is no cure-and sysmptoms can range from just being jittery to drugs and alchoholism. If the VA is doing a good job-(he believes its helpful)-then he can very well improve-BUT keep a close eye on anyone dealing with him (especially government people)-
He is truely blessed to have your support-The First Sergeant in the Sky is with you.

I had thought of the VA for some of my own issues.
I filed my claim thru the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) as I was told to use some type of expert help with the filing.
I was told about the local Vets Center (here in Santa Cruz County). The Vets Center is affiliated with the VA but is much smaller, friendlier, and local. They helped me with the finalization of my VA claim and offered constructive advice for my SSN claim also.
I've been involved with the Vets Center since 2005 and have gone thru their individual counciling and am still involved with a group that meets weekly. There is also a spouses group that meets bi-weekly that my wife attends.
The counciling has helped enormously with my relationship with both my wife and kids, it has also helped curb the "road rage" & neccessary impulse control (temper) required when dealing with the public. Note: not cured but, better.
FYI - Vets don't do chaos. That's why we're incessant planners - to avoid the stress.
Sounds as tho he's made the first step - that's the big one, admitting he's part of the problem.
Many of us had no idea what was going on until we were in our 50's or 60's not realizing that we'd been emotionally crippled by our training and experience.
Good Luck and please follow up on this.
And tell 'im "Welcome Home".

Bruce

I would also suggest you get his primary GP and Cardiologist involved. When your in your 70t's, all sorts of things can happen. From mild strokes, High BP, Diabetes, and Cancer. Anyone can give misleading symptoms.

The VA can/will help if it is PTSD, but they may not go deep enough.

Case in point, I'm 64 and my tinnitus has become very annoying. It is not just noise, now it sounds like really bad music,, and loud. The VA and I are discussing the possible causes and if any fixes. I know the cause, years on the range without ANY hearing protection,, Many classes on expedient demolition, and ear compressions from military free diving..

You can't get enough opinions...

Good Luck...
