What if Smith & Wesson didn't exist?
Taurus would have had to copy Colts.

Colt Python! Colt Detective Special, Ruger SP-101, and for just general purpose, beater, Ruger Service Six. And for old times sake a Colt New Service and Official Police.
And that's without getting into the more obscure sixguns out there. Dale

If Smith & Wesson's didn't exist there wouldn't be Taurus revolvers, and we wouldn't have the .44 Magnum or at least not until much later, the .357, the .38 Special or many other rounds let alone guns. We would be debating which is better the .45 Colt or the .45 ACP, and I think shooting would be alot less fun.

For revolvers Ruger, Charter Arms, maybe Taurus in that order of preference. (I know there are probably not a lot of CA fans on this forum but I've had several, new company and old, and had good experience with them. Not as refined, but they have always been functionally reliable for me.)

If S&W didn't exist, I'd be carrying a Colt 1861 Navy or a Peacemaker.

Goony-see Taurus model 44 and 608 for pretty near appearance of an Anaconda- I have one of each-they are the same frame-different calibers-44 Mag and 8 shot 357 mag respectively. They need Hogue grips (wood) for me. I am very fond of them. Flapjack.

If smith and wesson didn't exist, this post wouldn't be here to respond to. Definitely colts for play and rugers for work

I have only owned rugers for many years.(revolvers) I just got into the S&W, the colts and one taurus and one H&R revolver so far. For some reason i'm addicted to the 22 cal revolvers, the older C&R revolvers too like the H&R, colt and S&W.
The colts have a tight loc up on the cylinder when fired that i have ever seen. I still like my S&W & rugers anyway.
Now with that said no S&W's i'd still buy everything else now would we have won the west in the later 1800's to 1900's without the S&W i'm not sure.

No Smiths?
Dan Wesson, Strum-Ruger, Rhinos, and High Standard.
I still would not be able to afford a Korth. I have never been very enamored with the Colt snakes, but a Trooper or Detective might be nice.

I'd buy Colts, and a Browning HiPower. The only thing that's stopping me from doing that right now is that Smith and Wesson exists...

If S&W don't exist, then handguns would be nothing more that tools for me, so I would go back to Browning High Powers.

Rugers because that was what I bought when I couldn't afford the very best -- S&W from 1975 to 1987.
Colt Python is the most over-rated and over-priced domestic handgun on the planet. I might have bought the only lemon Python ever built and ONE was enough. I owned 2 Trooper Mk IIIs that were a joy to shoot but both got sold separately to buy S&Ws.

I didn't include Colt revolvers because I thought we were just talking about stuff you could still buy new.
I wish Colt would come out with some DA's.

Marurhin revolvers are excellent, a bit like a de luxe version of Rugers. They'd be the alternative for me.

If Smith and Wesson didn't exist I'd own a Benelli Super Black Eagle right now... but they do, so I get by with my Benelli Nova.
Handguns: Rugers, Colt SAAs, Kimber Autos, Browning, Sig. Clean Break

I'd own a few more Colts, but I might not be shooting DA as much. Probably wouldn't have as many guns.

Do you mean if S&W had never existed? Another company would have come up with very similar pistols made in similar quality. Or maybe Colt would have been more successful and still be a viable company.

Webley revolvers, High Standard Crusaders, Iver Johnson -- I have a couple examples of each (and they would have been more prolific)-- and I would own a bunch more Brownings, Springfields, Les Baer's and Ed Johnson's.

Agreed, but I think they very nearly are money in the bank.......provided there are enough old codgers like me left when someone sells mine.
To answer the OP, Colt's.

I think the OP mentioned in the middle of the thread something about he had intended only current production modes, I don't own any Smiths made after the mid 90s. That being said, if they had never existed I'd own some Dan Wesson wheel guns instead. I still like the concept of having one gun that with a few minutes of playing with it can be a nearly completely different gun, how many of us here have several different variants of S&W guns that all use the same caliber?

The world would be a lesser place. And living in such a benighted world, someone would sooner or later invent them... maybe call them by different names. But given that S&W revolvers are the ultimate in revolver development, someone would look at the designs offered by other manufacturers and determine that a better revolver could be made... and they'd make it. That revolver design would follow the most ideal pattern ever known to man... the S&W M&P, etc.
