Took home a stray today
Cleaned it up the best I could, but don't know if it is worth anymore time & money.
M15-3, 1K44741
looks like it was reblued, and a bad job at that.
No high polish finish at all, looks dull & different shades.
Did put some cold blue where the white metal showed.
Rear sight needs repair and no one has the kit in stock.
Bore seems OK, someone had put white paint on the front sight, took some time to clean that up.
Stocks are beat up bad, dings & scratches.
Got the SA smooth to around 3lbs, DA at 9lbs.
Oh well, I have taken in cats & dogs, but even they were in better shape......

Master Chief,
Nice find!!! It does not look too bad.
Was the rear sight threads stripped?
What did this beauty set you back?
Thanks,

Was $300+, rear sight may be striped or missing a spring.
There is a repair kit for it, but like I posted, no one has them in stock.
Till that is fixed, I won't shoot it, who knows where the bullets will go....

Master Chief,
Very nice price.
I had one where the threads were stripped and someone had removed the lock nut (end opposite the screwdriver slot).
I shot the revolver to get a POI, calculated where it needed to go, made the adjust to the rear (by pushing the sight) and then using a spanner on the lock nut, tightened everything up.
I may have gotten lucky, but it was to the center of bullseye at 25 yards.
I also looked for a new rear sight and agree with you that all are sold out til mid summer.
When you do replace the rear sight, a word to the wise, the spring next to the screwdriver slot is very strong. I plan to disassemble the unit in a plastic bag to control the launch.
Thanks,
Hoover, LT (SS)

Awesome shooter grade 15 !
Fix the rear sight and shoot the fool out of her! Honest wear is nothing to be ashamed of in my book.
And you get to show up the tupperware crowd with a "seasoned" S&W wheel gun...it don't get no better than that.

I checked out the sight, there are no springs, so should I wait for a kit or order the parts needed?
Would like to have a white outlined blade, I am getting up in age where I my eyes are not as some of the young wippersnapers......LOL!

Hi:
I might have a rear sight for a "K" Frame (Used).
If you still need one send me your mailing address and I will mailed it to you and you can see if it fits your revolver.

Nothing at all wrong with that gun..........if it were a reblue, and just "shooter grade" I would look around for a Behlert K-frame rear sight assembly. They are hard to find, I missed on on Ebay recently, but the Dan Wesson 15 I used to have had a Behlert rear sight which I installed.
I wouldn't sink any more cash into a "working" gun, been there, done that............now I just leave them as is......I have plenty of guns that look thrashed but only have a handful of rounds through them.
I also can't resist a deal on guns like that.

Old 15-3 Stray
I think you got a good one there at a fair price. It would have gone home with me too.
Last August I bought my first Smith revolver; a model 15-3 with a 1972 serial number. Cosmetically it was in about the same shape as yours, but otherwise in excellent material condition. It was a $350 purchase. The more I shot it the more I enjoyed the experience. Since then a goodly number more similar Smith revolvers have found their way here, but that one is still a favorite.
Hope you enjoy yours as much!

I like stray muts. They usually make good shooters and cost way less than the pure-breds that I'd be afraid to shoot.
Now if it needs a permanent home, I have room. It'll have two-other K-frames to play with:-)

I just picked up a 15-1 on auction so haven't held it yet. Paid $300 for it. It's been fooled with a little bit (stocks look a little large, and the space between the frame and crane where they meet appears to have a tiny width at the top) but I hope things are serviceable. I carried one issued to me with the Federal Police for many years and loved it. Good purchase!

I agree with jtcarm & LennyD - you got a fair deal. Shoot it and enjoy. I've paid more for worse.
