Default NYPD S&W revolvers- policy on mods?

Just a quick question, since NYPD officers were required to buy their duty guns from the approved list, and thus owned them.......were they allowed to change things like grips, etc.?

I know they most likely couldn't change the springs, since the NYPD was stringent on DAO revolvers and heavy, stock triggers..........but just wondering if an NYPD officer could put Pachmayrs on his S&W 64 instead of the stock magnas.....

My recollection from the NYPD threads is that grips could be changed, or were swapped out before the guns were purchased. This is the reason the serial number on some of the NY-1 guns were under the cylinder window on the left, so it could be seen without removing the oversized rubber grips.

Yes grips were allowed to be changed. Pachmayer Gripper seems to have been the favorite.

From reading stories here from those that were there, they swapped the grips at purchase...

I don't know if it's still the case,I don't go into the city that often, but up until a few years ago,I would see officers still carrying Model 10s.

Grips could be changed and usually were, but there were rules regarding those. I seem to recall the Pachmyr Grippers being the only ones allowed, because I have never seen any other rubber or wooden grips on any revolver. Maybe it was because Pachmayr grips had the little "window" at the bottom of the grip so you could still read the serial number off the butt. Guys either kept the guns stock, added a Tyler t-grip to the wooden grips, or put Pach's on. I had pachmyr's on my 64. You couldn't even polish the guns. They came with a dull "non-reflective" finish. There were rules regarding holsters, as well. Ankle or shoulder holsters were never offially approved, but guys used them. The holster had to be a belt holster with a preventive strap over the back.

I suppose its possible, but they would have had to gotten on before 1987.

1987 started the NY-1 M64s once the autos started many guys stopped carrying the revolvers.

As I understand it if you went through the academy with a particular gun you could use it for your career, like the M 10 or M 64. However if you went to the newer guns, you couldn't go back to the revolvers?

Yeah, the model 10 was phased out around 1988 (I think July) and the Ruger Service Six and the S&W 64 were issued with bobbed hammers for DAO shooting. A couple of ND's were traced to a cop cocking the hammer on his model 10. Service Six was only around for a year or two and then they went to the Ruger GPNY, which was a .38 only GP100 with the bobbed hammer. And yes, you were grandfathered in if you had the gun before a change was made, and lots of guys wanted to keep their blued model 10's as a "status symbol" to show they were veterans. A couple of high round shootins with perps changed many minds about that. Those that kept them have mostly retired, but 1987 was only 25 years ago, and if you come on the job at 20, you're only 45 now, so there are many guys with that time and more who are still on the job (especially if they have kids). Many of those guys are bosses who aren't riding in a sector car, so they never felt the need to switch to the 9MM, although the job did strongly urge it so they wouldn't have to stockpile .38 ammo. Once you switch to the 9MM, you can no longer carry the .38. You kepth the gun, but coulsn't use it for enforcement duties. I know the police commissioner, Ray Kelly, still carries his model 36 Chief in an ankle holster. I once answered a radio run of a man with a gun and rolled up on the corner to see a suspect on the wall being frisked by what i thought was a detective. He had a model 36 in the guys ear and when he turned to me I almost crapped my pants to see it was Commissioner Kelly! He had been in his own car and heard the call come over the air. Marine who worked his way up the ranks and he still has that Marine/cop mentality.

I have a GPNY too

The trigger return was a bit sluggish so I trimmed two coils off a S&W rebound spring and installed that, and now my DA pull feels so much smootherwith a nice, fast trigger return........ I doubt that would have been allowed when it was on duty lol

That's a great collection of NYPD duty guns, I need a NYPD 64 and also the Service Six.......would love an SPNY to go with my GPNY.

I have no great love for the Pachmayr Gripper, but it seems to have been THE "standard" for replacement rubbers on service revolvers.......I like the Presentations myself, but unfortunately Pachmayr never offered them for the GP100.

For some reason, the Rugers just don't look right with Pach's. The lines of the grips just don't flow with the gun. The S&W K frame looks right at home with the Pach's. I have a set of Pachmayr Presentation grips. The bottom is to wide and flat. Got them on a used S&W 10. Don't like them either. Put Gripper grips on there and all is well! The Rugers looked right with the factory grips, espeically the GP100. The new ones have Hogues, and they look awful. I bought a Police Six .357 recently. Came with the factory skinny woods. Changed them out for the factory target woods. Much better.

All of the GPNY's I have seen, except mine, have the Pachmayr Grippers. It seemed to be the "standard" for the NYPD, like was said above.

I love watching old episodes of "COPS" and pretty much all you see on the wheelguns in the holsters are Grippers and Presentations...........with maybe a Hogue here and there. Few of the LEO's had woods on the guns.

Thank you

I have been trying to accumulate NYPD revolvers. I have a few others that I dont have pictures of. Also my 1946 pre 10 was a NYPD gun. I have a 1930s colt that should be NYPD, but I havent looked into it.

I come across quite a few of Nypd guns, rugers are not found all to often. I missed out on a SpeedSix 3", I was cheap...

My speed six has the star stamp, supposed to be an acceptance mark? Perhaps BigBoku will chime in

I want a 60 ny-1, 2" 64 and a 3" square butt ny-1s. And for Rugers, SPNY and speedsix. They will come along at some point. I think it wil give me a nice little collection. I have shot them all, the 4" 64 is one of my favorite guns, period. The GP is a tank and shoots well with a decent trigger. It would be an easy gun to get in a groove with.

I have found blue Rugers as well, they were just beat up ugly so I passed.

Now as far as the Gripper grip, most of the stainless guns have them, however most of the M10s are wearing factory wood. Time after time I find the 10s with wood, well, well worn wood. The last one I looked at the out side grip panel was smooth, I thought it was a smooth grip. Well until I looked closer, all worn. I have found 10s sub $200, I just do buyem. I do like wear on the grippers, I find it cool

For buying the stainless guns, were behind the curve, we should have been buying starting in 2007 as they retired out...

I was thinking of collecting some autos, but not for now...

This 10-8 may be an NYPD gun, made in 1980 and the seller thought that "the guy I bought it from thinks his uncle got it from a retired NYC cop........." we all know how that goes

Maybe someday I'll get it lettered, I don't have a pic of the right side right now, but like you said above, it's worn smooth. I haven't even gotten around to shooting this one yet, and it's been nearly 2 years.
