To me or my LGS?
A couple of weeks ago I posted some pix of my new 617. It appeared that the forcing cone was not machined properly.(or at all) The gun has been returned to S&W thru my LGS. When the repair work is done will the gun be returned to me or to my LGS? I included my full contact info in the repair letter that went with the gun.

I can't state this as known company policy, but I would expect the company to return a gun to the point from which it originated unless there was an explicit statement in the submission that says, "After repair, item should be returned to owner, not store."
Your LGS might be able to tell you how S&W handled previous returns, assuming there have been any from that store.

I returned one directly (via FedEx) on their (S&W) dime and they returned it to me directly via FedEx as well.
You might want to just call S&W to ask them what they will do. Wouldn't hurt.

FORGET ALL THAT. Back to your gunstore, where the transaction originated.. They WILL pay any fees though.

Both good thoughts. I just called my LGS and was told it would come back to them and they'd call when it came in.

Post back with the results. I would be surprised if they didn't get things fixed.

The only one I ever sent home was picked-up from my home and delivered back to my home. Now...it was the SAME gun. Had it been a replacement gun, they would have had to ship it to a dealer for transfer to me.

Interesting. Would that apply to only handguns or long guns too? Is that a Federal or State requirement? The reason I ask is that I had to send in my shotgun to Savage Arms and they sent me, directly, a completely different, new one with a totally different serial number.

There is a difference between the laws concerning long guns and hand guns. Federal law requires that the hand gun purchaser go through the transfer process, which in reality is nothing but a background check and only an FFL holder can do that. The state laws can vary widely. In many states there is no requirement for anything. In my state of residence, I can just walk up to a guy and sell or buy a gun as long as both of us are residents of this state. Now, if I purchase or sell a hand gun across state lines...that's where the transfer has to occur and that is Federal law.
Many people believe that only a dealer can ship a hand gun out-of-state, but that is false. I can sell a hand gun to anybody in any state (that allows it) as long as I "legally" mail it to a dealer for transfer to the out-of-state resident.

That part I knew. Just wasn't sure about the other.

I have sent several in for work (on my dime).
LGS lets me generate a USPS label from his business and he sends it out gratis.
I always include a letter detailing the work to be performed and requesting return ship to my residence.
Previously, I had always received an estimate, sent in my check and the gun was sent directly to me.
Last time, the gun came back to the store with ZERO documentation except a sticky note "replaced lever N/C".
Luckily the LGS owner is a buddy and he immediately noticed it was my gun.
Go figure.

Just a point of clarification. It is illegal (by Federal law) to ship a HANDGUN through the Postal Service. Oddly enough, it IS legal to ship a long gun via the USPS, though. Handguns must go by common carrier (such as UPS or Fedex). Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the package contains a handgun. However, it is illegal for the carrier to mark the package to indicate that it does contain such.
I'm sure that these requirements are violated every day (wink wink).....but, everyone should be aware of them.

Not exactly.
FFL holders can and do ship handguns legally through USPS.
Private individuals are restricted to common carrier only when shipping to a manufacturer or licensed gunsmith for repair.
