s&w model 64 38 special
friend at work said his dad gave him one original box , cleaning kit or brush .. the whole bit . he isnt sure but he believes it is unfired
he was asking me about ammo for it and i told him to get some type like a lead semi wadcutterfor practice and a box or two of any newer brand name hollow points for protetion use . believe it is 4" barrel . it had a receipt in the box .... believe he said it was purchased in 1975 for $150 ? $ dont remember the price for sure but i will ask him again , just for curiosity
i also assume it would be a mid size k frame ? model gun . so it should be ok for + p shells.
yeah ! i already ask him if he wanted to sell it !
just what would be the value of this arm ?? i would give $ 250 for it and not feel hurt

$250 would be a very low number around here. Gun broker auction site might give you a more realistic price point. Looking at the cylinder for turn marks will tell you if it has been fired more than a few times.

Shop in the area has an ad for police trade-in Model 64 with 2 inch barrels for $429.95.
Second shop has S&W revolver 64.6, .38 special, with Nill walnut grips; $650.00 (image show 4 inch barrel.
I agree with Foodfuzz that the one you mention in new condition is at least $350. Probably $400 or more.

S&W still makes this model. Davidsons has them in stock. MSRP is $689.00 so $250 would be quite a bargain for an unfired example.
see
Product: Model 64
A 1975 vintage would be a pinned barrel model, which would make it a bit more interesting. What is the gun's "dash" number inside the action?

A picture would help determine if it's a tapered or heavy barrel; likely a heavy barrel as very few tapered 64s were around in '75. If you open the crane and look on the frame, the dash number is there (indicating which iteration of 64 you have).
If the item is as described, unfired (and so presumably lightly handled, if at all), it's "perfect" by NRA modern gun condition standards: in new condition in every respect. Add to that the original box and tools (you didn't mention the paperwork), and that's a collector's grade item.
A buyer would be lucky to get it for $450; one of the higher charging shops that specializes in genuinely "as new" items would probably put a tag of $600 to $650 on it.
Your friend might want to determine it's true condition and history, and consider an alternative if he just wants a shooter.

Most Model 64s are pretty mundane, although they make great defense guns. I stumbled across this one a number of years ago, and it's anything but mundane. It may possibly be unique. It was acquired with its original box and papers.

That's beautiful, my favorite 4" square butt and wood grips.

I don't own one, but you can't go wrong with a 64! ( have a 10-8, 67, and a 1919 M&P) Similar. At that price, I would be on it like a $2.00 Buffet!
Don't let us know where it is at, or it will be GONE!!! Bob
