Value of 27-2 vs 28-2
I may be selling either a 27-2 or a 28-2,,both are blue with 6" barrel, both have org grips and have been shot, both are in very good condition----is either one more desirable than other--if so how much difference in price? Thanks

One guy's opinion...I'd say that all else being equal with condition, S vs N serial #, grips, accessories, etc, the 27-2 is probably gonna fetch about $100-150 more in that barrel length. If it was 4", then the 27-2 would be worth quite a bit more.

+1 on what he said because people love the high luster blue and the steel checkered top strap on the Model 27. In fact some people think it's the best looking S&W revolver made including me.

The 27 is twice the gun the 28 is. But now days the prices on the 28s have crept up very close to what the far more deluxe 27s bring. I would choose to keep the 27 over a 28 any day. If you own both you should be aware of differences.

In the looks department, I would agree with you. From a pure shooters perspective, it's a wash.
Depending on condition, and your future intentions for them, that should drive your decision. If they are shooter grade, you could sell the 27 and make more money to fund another gun, pay bills, etc

My 27-2
I think my 27-2 is one of the most beautiful revolvers I have ever seen. Sometimes I just take it out and hold it, look at it, wipe it off and wait until I can shoot it again. I'm very proud of it.

27's are finished better than the 28's but both shoot equally as well.
The 28 was finished in a dull, satin blue as most we're intended to be for
law enforcement use. The 27's as a rule have the better, higher polished surfaces and also have the top strap checkering. I own and shoot both models and on any given day with the same barrel length they will shoot the same. Same frames on both weapons and internals are also the same. It's your pick which one to sell and the 27's usually command a higher price.

I shoot better with a 27.
I'm a better driver with an expensive car, too.

I just love the nickel finish on my 27. It's the only nickel finish revolver I've got.

My opinion
The Model 27 is arguably the finest revolver ever made (building on the excellent craftsmanship of the original .357 Magnums and Registered Magnums)...fit, finish, checkering, & mechanics are all superb. The Model 28 is the working man's N-frame .357. Mechanically the same as the Model 27, but without the checkered top frame and beautiful blue finish. My 27s and 28s shoot equally well. I love shooting, handling, and admiring my Model 27s, but whenever I travel by car or motorcycle, the plain old trusty Highway Patrolman is my choice (I leave the fancy 27s in the gun safe). However, with that said, keep the Model 27 and sell the HP...IMHO, both the 27s and 28s will continue to increase in value, but the 27s will increase faster and hold their value.

The bright blue finish, paired with the checkering on the top strap makes the 27 a FAR superior and more accurate shooter than the underdog Model 28.
I think Keith did an article on that, with four of the top shooters in the world all flown in, and all 4 shot better with the 27's.

Like other have said they are virtually the same revolver except the Model 27 has the high luster blue and checkered steel top strap. So the difference is in looks only. The other difference is the model 27 was offered in barrel lengths the Model 28 was not.

The only line of thinking I could come up with for keeping the M28 and selling the M27 -----
You can probably find another M27 in very good condition easily enough if you ever want another one. It may be tougher to find an M28 as nice as the one you have, since the M28 was marketed as a rough and ready sidearm, many of them got a lot of outdoor use, holster wear, etc.
The more elegant M27s are likely to have lead a more pampered existance and therefore high-condition examples are fairly common.

Yes, but if he is looking at possibly having to shoot a pit bull, this completely changes the dynamics of this whole thread.
Only the 28 can be used with the venerable CTG round.
