Default S&W HD or HP?

I had the hot's for a HD, but all I found that were at best were "OK" maybe were way too high in price.
So, I got a HP at a reasonable price again & didn't make it into another calaber like I did the first two(.45Colt & 38-40/38WCF).

Good choice? Well, anything a HD can do a HP can do more as far as a shooter I think.
Any thoughts?

Agreed. I still have the "wants" for a nice HD but i'll be patient and look for a spectacular deal on one. I prefer having the versatility of shooting .357 and .38 in a gun so right now thats what i've been collecting. Older P&R revolvers with 4" or shorter barrels in .357
The HP fits the bill perfectly. As does the pre-27 and 27-2

I personally have no use for a big, heavy .38 special with fixed sights. I'd much rather have a 4" Highway Patrolman.

I say get' em both!
I have a 5" Heavy Duty from 1952. That is a fantastic revolver. I even used it to re-qualify for my carry permit. Instructor was impressed. Bought a Lobo IWB holster for it and have carried it some. It balances better than any N-Frame I own, and I shoot it very well. Plus it's just COOL.
I also have two 4" Highway Patrolman revolvers, both in 4" and a 4" M27-2. These are very nice Magnums, and I really like them, but there's just somethin' special about the Heavy Duty. (And for that matter, The Outdoorsman too. I've got of them also).

I have been looking at an Outdoorsman that really needs a thorough cleaning, but I think underneath the grime is a 98% gun. The guy has not put a price on it yet, but I believe it can be had for quite a ways south of a grand. I don't think I can pass that up even if it is a .38!

I don't think you will think you have gone wrong with the HP once you start shooting it as they are great.

As an owner/shooter, not a collector, I believe that the M-28 is a much more practical option that the 38/44 H.D; as much as I would love to have a nice one.

I agree that is the more practical, but I already have a nice pre-28..........I don't have a 38/44.

There is nothing like a 4" Pre War HD in your hands!

I must say that when I opened this thread I thought someone was choosing between a Heavy Duty and a High Power!

I'd like to get a HD someday, just to complete all production frame sizes in .38 Special, if nothing else.

(Yes, I have a .38 Special 586. )

Shooting magnums doesn't interest me so I'd opt for the HD anyway as a shooter.

Now HiPowers, like the M&P, are things one can't have too many of.........

Good thing too, as I believe they reproduce prolifically in the dark confines of a safe.

Regards,

Pat

I don't even have the option as the Model 28 in standard form is VERBOTTEN here. Still, I have seen Model 28's that have been reworked and appear to the eye in every way to be a Model 20...except that the longer case will still fit into the cylinder of course. And they are still adjustable sighted.

In the meantime, I have a 1955 manufactured Heavy Duty and it hit exactly where I would have adjusted it to hit if it came with adjustable sights. So I am most happy with it.

Still, if one of those Model 28's that have been magically turned into a Model 20 ever comes my way I will not say "no" either. Both are just so cool.
