A "less loved" 27-2
We all like the 3 &1/2 inch 27's, the 5 inch guns aren't far behind.
The 4 inch ones are even a little more "rare" than it's 1/2 inch shorter brother.
The 6 &1/2 inch guns are the ones that look "just right" but that barrel length went away in 1967. The 8 & 3/8th guns make an appearance here on the forum from time to time, not a lot of interest but it was the one I wanted when I went out to find my first Mod 27.
That leaves the 6 inch revolver. From the late 60's to the early 90's a Mod 27 in this barrel length was available and it's what I'd consider the "standard configuration" Model 27.
Here's a '77 or '78 revolver ( Middle N 400000 range ) with a 6 inch barrel, target hammer & trigger and a fine set of presentation (or smooth target) stocks.
A more "common" gun, not as sexy as a "FBI" 27 or as smooth looking as an 8 & 3/8th target. But a revolver not to pass up if you find it in high condition OR in a good shooter grade at the right price.

Great looking gun. The grips look like my Kuracs. I have them on a pre 27 with an 8 3/8" barrel.

GF:
Agree with you on "high condition" and "shooter grade" guns at the right price. I too am always on the look out for the same. The one that you have photo'd is a real beauty.
Thanks for sharing,

I have a soft spot for a 6" 27...my first S&W. This one came my way as a replacement for the earlier one that got away. Great topic; your 27 is gorgeous.

I agree with every thing you said and for me the 8 3/8 was the hardest to find and of course 6 inch barrel 27's are fairly easy to find. Your 6 inch is a beauty by the way.

Nice picture - great looking 27, and pretty stocks, too! Most of my actual shooting experience with 27s has been with 8-3/8 inch guns, but I always thought the 6- or 6.5-inch guns made the most sense, so those are not "less loved" by me.

Very Nice sixes !
Probably made sense back in the day to make more 6" Model 27's for sportsman
and more 4" Model 28's for LEO's.
Then the Combat Magnum came along....

Nice catch there Sebago. Course in a 27 you gotta load 'em in 38 special cases.

I usually load them over 7.0 Grains of Unique and crimp over the first driving band in a Magnum case... I have shot untold bazillions of rounds over the past 38 years using this load... but in the solid configuration...

I just never liked pushing them down in a Mag case, kind of spoiled the look of 'em. That's partly why the 27 is not my favorite N frame. I really prefer the 44 and 45 caliber slugs.

I enjoy the 6-inch Model 27 as the very best shooting .357 Magnum revolver on earth.

I agree with bmcgilvary and here's a couple of my 6 inch
27's. The blued gun shoots really good, but that nickled dude with the fancy stocks is scary accurate from a bench rest position.
teesur.
6 inch Model 27-2, shipped March, 1977.
6 inch Model 27-2, shipped Sept. 1979.

All 27-2's and earlier are complete bad to the bone works of art IMHO.
Does'nt matter the barrel size. If i can get em' right they are
coming home with me. Very nice looking guns and great shooters.
