So long, Ernie!
Ernest Borgnine dead at 95. I had the good fortune to meet him twice at a fund raiser at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel ln LA a year apart. A year later, he sat down at my table and remembered me, at 91 years of age.

He played some great roles and yet always seemed like a guy you could sit down and have a great chat with. RIP, Mr Borgnine.

I met him once in Bend Ore. Really a nice guy. He wasn't as tall as he looked on TV. Always remember that big gap toothed smile. He will be missed.

Many years ago, I was on vacation and I went to the Emperor Clock company in Fairhope, AL. He was walking in the door at the same time that I did and I held the door for him.

One thing I was surprised about, was how little importance he placed on his pictures. All he wanted to do was keep working, all his life. I questioned him about some of the movies I thought were some of his best, he didn't really to seem to care about the finished product. I wonder how prevalent this is among Hollywood folks.

In November, 1967, I came home on emergency leave from Vietnam. My brother (who just completed his tour in SE Asia) was at Letterman General, in a coma, after being hit by a car.
He was in a ward with several wounded from Vietnam. Ernest Borgnine visited the hospital and spent a good deal of time with our wounded soldiers. He wouldn't allow any news people in the ward while he was there. He just wanted to visit and offer encouragement to out wounded.
I set at my brothers bed a few days, and there was Ernest Borgnine, not telling people how good of a actor, or talking about his work in movies and TV, but enchouraging our soldiers. He would help the orderlies make the beds and care for our guys.
I have a picture of him at my brothers bed side, I'm on a road trip now but when I get home I'll try and post it.
I put Ernest Borgnine in the same class as Ann Margret and Bob Hope, only he wasn't there for the shows.
Heaven is a brigther place with his arrival. I hope he can take time to visit my brother (who passed on a couple years ago) again when he gets there.

Losing McHale and Andy Taylor in the same week doesn't seem fair.

He surely deserved the Oscar for "Marty".
But there was no cast ever better, than the "Wild Bunch".
I remember seeing a documentary on Sam Peckinpah. He recounted the campfire scene where the gang was reminiscing. The scene had gone on for a while, and someone finally asked Mr. Peckinpah why he didn't "cut" at the appropriate time. He replied, that the acting was so good, and he was weeping to the point he could not say "cut".
Jaime Sanches ("Angel"), and L.Q. Jones ("T.C."), are the only two left alive.
