Pistols - Smith & Wesson
This is great news! The SD pistols are better, and apparently not as conducive to the unfortunate cadre of "kitchen table gunsmiths" who think that removal of parts is the way to improve a pistol.

Perhaps it is the price point of the SIGMA that invited those who purchased this pistol to try to make it into something it was never designed to be. The SIGMA is a self-defense pistol with a trigger pull duplicating that of the double action pull of a K frame revolver.

Those that wanted to turn it into a pistol with a light trigger pull should have just purchased the M&P.

Perhaps S&W was tired of people asking for warranty service to "fix" a trigger that was designed that way. Perhaps S&W was tired of seeing "defective" pistols come in with failure to fire issues because the aforesaid "kitchen table" hack decided some spring was just a part that S&W never should have included. Perhaps S&W felt that the SD was just a better pistol with an industry standard rail that could be offered at the same price point. Perhaps all of the foregoing figured in, but I for one will not miss the SIGMA. I will only miss the amusing stories of those who tried to "improve" it by removing parts and who then come on this and other forums to complain to the world that S&W makes defective junk and that the service department mistreated them for not redesigning their pistol to make it into a "poor man's M&P" or a Performance Center tack driver.

A great pistol IF some would have just enjoyed it for what it was - but it had "run its course" mostly due to the fact that S&W could not really proof it against the "kitchen table" group.

This comment, if serious, makes my brain hurt.

Better yet, with the coming rush for assault rifles - I hear they are stopping all handgun production to add capacity for rifles.

I really wonder if this had to do with the glock lawsuit. Why wait this long to fix the one thing that everyone hated about the sigma?

I loved my 2 Sigma's but traded them in on a G26 and G30. Had S&W made something size, weight and capasity like the Glocks I would have stayed loyal to S&W. The Glocks are truely fine weapons with great triggers out the box. Wife wanted something smaller and I had the hots for a .45. The little 9mm "Baby Glock" holds 12+1 and the .45 10+1 or 13+1 with the G21 mag.

Glock you say never heard of them are they any good?....Seriously though what specific design elemenet of Glock makes it more reliable than an SD? As for the baby Glock I never understood them they just make no sense just as thick as any other Glock you want a thinner gun to be able to conceal better

If true, I'm glad I cut loose a while back and bought a second 9VE. Got the first one about a year ago and while it didn't care much for my hand loads it percolates just fine with factory ammo and I shoot it far better than I ever did a Glock. I view it as a 16 shot Model 10 which, at the price, is not too bad a setup.

Heck, if I find them being clearanced out at fire sale prices I might lay in a third one. Most of my guns were discontinued years ago so what's one more "obsolete" gun?

First off, I'm not new to concealed carry. I got my first permit in 1974. While you may want a thinner gun to conceal better I want a double stack. I don't think you can have too many boolits. You may be the range hotshot but in a self defense situation the target moves and also returns fire. More boolits is a good thing. I never said a Glock was more reliable or better in any way except the trigger and there is no argument there. The baby Glock is smaller and lighter than any S&W semi. The Shield gives you 7 or 8 rounds and save about 3/16" width. 5 more boolits, worth the 3/16" to me. S&W make nothing that compares to the G30. To each their own.

Fact is the M&P 45c is bigger and heavier and only holds 8. I'm not here to bust your balls, please don't bust mine. I have owned, and carried a sidearm 38 years. Thirty seven of those I did fine with out a Glock. Relax, we're all on the same side! Reply if you please, I'll ignore it but you'll feel better getting the last word in.

Sorry....I just get so sick of hearing about Glock I own an older G23 nothing special about it other than it feels like im holding a plastic 2x4. There is nothing about the Glock that makes it more reliable than any other modern semi-auto. Break any modern semi-auto down they are almost the same.

Id own more Glocks if they didnt charge so much...Glock has the largest profit margin in the industry. A poly frame with plastic sights cost very little to produce but yet they charge well over say S&WSDVE. Now that S&W did away with their funky sear assembly what exactly is the difference between say a G23 and an SD40 (besides much lower cost and metal sights the front being night?

That's simple. Mall Ninja's, Tactical Wilderness Scouts and Forum Commandos have all heard about Glocks on CNN and know for a fact that they are the best handgun ever made. After all they are on their 5th or 6th version of perfection. You can't be perfect that many times over and not be perfect.

I guess the sigma series ran it's course.

When Smith created the SD, I thought they were filling a nitch that basically didn't exist, sort of an in between gun. Lightening up the trigger on the sigma wouldn't erase all the history that it endured over the years.

I wish the SDVE series well, maybe I'll get one.

Good to be friends! I carried a 9VE for about 4 years and the wife a 9VE about 2 years. Put about 5000 rounds thru them combined. Only one failure, broken striker at about 800 rounds on mine. I was dry firing at the time. They said it was a defect not dry firing that caused it to break. Since it was my EDC I used snap caps from then on. S&W replaced it, did a trigger, polished the feed ramp and throated it, all at no cost. The Glock's striker is about half the size of the Sigmas.

I guess I must have really strong hands. I never saw any reason to mod the trigger. I carry a SW9VE everyday for my CCW and I love it. I have fired well over 3000 rounds and have had no issues what so ever. The main reason for my quote was this, if you are not a gunsmith PLEASE do not go on youtube to find these retarded videos on how to mod your guns.

Gentlemen, If I might,
I agree with all of the above. S&W had just gone about as far as they could go with the Sigma. The design was dated and, with the other manufacturers making weapons with very good triggers out of the box, S&W had nowhere to go with the weapon. It was, from what I understand, the best selling pistol in the line up. But a lot of 1st time buyers(i.e., Academy specials) were tickled with the price, and horrified with the trigger pull, once they got to the Range. Read that as "Dissatisfied Customer"
Of course, we know that different weapons systems have different trigger pulls, depending on the weapons operating system. The Sigma was designed from the start to have a revolver like double action trigger pull, mostly with an eye toward LE contracts. Glock was just about to put S&W out of business by supplying about 80%(+/-) of the US Law Enforcement Agencies and quite a few world wide military and foreign police Agencies. When the Sigma was introduced, it wasn't beta tested enough and the ensuing problems this caused literally marked the gun for life as a P.o.S. Even after being re-engineered, and re-introduced(VE series), the Sigma had a bad reputation that S&W never could get away from.
Now, years later, a newer pistol, the SD is introduced. The SD shows it's Sigma heritage in it's grip shape, striker fire control system and light weight. M&P heritage in it's slide, sights, and Pictanny rail system. S&W was able to re-engineer the fire control lockwork to greatly improve the weapon's trigger feel. And set it up with a roughly 8lb trigger/sear break that gets smoother and lighter feeling as it gets some "mileage" on it. With a quick stack up and crisp sear break, the SD pistol will not suffer from the same long and heavy trigger pull that has put so many people off of the Sigma system, not to mention the bad reputation that exists to this day. And with the introduction of the SD VE series, for a very good price. I predict that the SD VE series will soon be a very common pistol in the U.S. S&W, it's about time. Thank you.
FWIW, Ofc.JL
BTW, I was always a defender of the Sigma series as it was a pretty good system, properly broken-in. But, Boy, did I get tired of trying to teach people about the Gun. The reputation was just too big and wide. Even people that knew nothing about firearms in general would tell me what a P.o.S. the Sigma was. It got very old.

For what it's worth, the sigma 9VE just fits my hand like a glove and if I close my eyes, pull the gun up 2 handed,I open my eyes peering right down the sights. Instead of using the tip of my trigger finger,I use the 1st joint and can pop charcoal brickets, small apples, rocks etc. out past 20 yds. or so. Got a 3rd gen. Glock 17 but I HATE!!!! that white outline rear sight. The 17 is fine but doesen't feel as good in the hand as the sigma to me. The 17 trigger is far lighter but I guess it matters not. As the great border patrilman Bill Jordan once said..."speeds fine but accuracy is final".
