Default M&P insert mag, no round chambered
I own several M&P's and all of them after a few hundred rounds will release the slide when the magazine is inserted hard.

The problem I have is with my M&P pro 5". About 50% of the time the slide will go forward on reload but no round is chambered. If I rack the slide no spent casing is ejected and a new round is chambered. I have not replaced the recoil spring and probably have about 1,000-1,500 rounds through this gun.

Has anybody else had this problem? Anybody have a fix?

It's not a "problem". It's just the wear/fit between the slide release and the slide.

1) You have to slam the mag home for it to jump the release regularly.
2) It helps to have the mass of a fully loaded mag. If you're shooting the Pro in Production or SSP Division in competition, only 10 rounds in the mag may not have enough inertia.
3) You may have a bit of a burr on the slide catch, or in the slide. Take a polishing stone or file VERY lightly to the slide release and or the inside of the slide catch on the slide. Your "problem" will disappear quickly!

Take your thumb off the slide catch?

I've had more than one person show me the " gun problem" of premature slide release with no cartridge being chambered, and what they showed me was their thumb hitting the slide catch. (They swore that was not the problem until I saw it happening)

I think I am one of the ones that will have his trigger finger ride up on the slide release and as I'm inserting the mag I somehow prematurely release the slide. If I hook my trigger finger ever so slightly, I have no problems having it chamber a round no matter how many may be in the magazine. I have several friends who have a different technique and can get my M&P9 to auto-forward every time without failure to catch a round. It is me. I think it has as much to do with the fact that I tend to shoot my M&P45 a bit more and the ever-so-slightly larger frame on the 45 puts my trigger finger in a better and more out-of-the-way place.

Thanks to everybody who replied. I'm still curious if anybody has had this problem.

JeffWard~ The problem isn't the slide going home, it that it does not chamber a round when it does. I like the fact that the slide will go without pressing the slide release.

OKFC05~ I don't think my thumb is on the slide release but I guess I'll have somebody video me shooting a match and pay particular attention to that side of the gun to make sure. I've been shooting M&P's for a while and this gun is the only one that has had this problem. The slide release is very stiff (I don't intentionally use it....ever) but it is possible. The thought crossed my mind too that since these are standard 17rnd magazines with only 10rnds loaded the slide could be push the round down instead of forward.

catcus-jack~ I plan to if I can't get some other resolution. I just don't want to be without my gun for several weeks/months just to get the response that OKFC05 gave. Nothing sucks more then to send your gun off to a dealer/smith for weeks and get it back in the same condition it left in, with the response "gun is fine, operator is broken"....

HTFUDan, it may not be your thumb, it may be like me and my trigger finger. I index my trigger finger high along the side of the slide and I can feel the slide release hitting the 2nd knuckle of that finger. If you can slowly do a reload of your gun and pay strict attention to where your trigger finger is. I never had issues until the 9 and I think it's because it is slightly smaller. Obvisouly the Glocks didn't have the ambi slide release so it wasn't an issue or something to watch out for.

After a couple of people showed me the problem, I experimented with my Pro 5 and found I could induce it by resting on the slide catch and slamming the mag in. As the mag starts to seat, the catch will release with light pressure, apparently just a touch too soon.

That said, I would go through all the usual checks and lip deburr of the magazines-I keep them clean and dry by disassembling and cleaning with CRC silicone- and numbering them so I can find out if only one mag has a problem. A sticky follower could possibly slow the bullet rise just enough?

As to loading 10 in a 17 rounder--everybody who competes in production and SSP does that.
