Default Mod 36 serial database?

Hello,
I'm trying to determine the manufacture date of my newly acquired S&W Mod 36, is there a database online somewhere?

Also, I've been reading threads on here saying you can get info from S&W on a specific gun such as manufacture, when and where it was shipped from the factory, etc. Any info on how you go about doing this? Can it be done with a simple letter to S&W with serial # or do they have to inspect the firearm itself?

A little back history on my new Mod 36... My Grandfather was a Buffalo, NY police officer and then Detective later on. About 15 years after he died, my Grandmother decided to go through his safe deposit box with his police stuff. She saw the pistols and got scared that she was doing something illegal possessing them and called an old friend in law enforcement and he was happy to take them off her hands. My Aunt found out about that and marched down to the station and demanded them back. They would only give them back if she took all the required classes in NY and had them registered to her. Unfortunately they would not give her the leather chest holsters, billy club, handcuffs, or brass knuckles that belonged to my Grandfather stating that they were "illegal" for a civilian to own.
About 6 years ago my Aunt told me that she was giving me one of my Grandfather's revolvers for my birthday that year. She couldn't get any info on how to transfer the pistol off her NY registration and out of state. I contacted my local Sheriff's office, local gun shops, and finally a shop close to her in NY. This past week, she finally went to the local shop and transferred the pistol and shipped it to me, and this afternoon I picked it up. My Grandfather meant a lot to me, he was also my Godfather and a wonderful man. It made a long journey to get here, and it will forever be a treasured heirloom.

Thank you for your help.

Patrick

A letter from S&W costs $50. If you will post the serial number but make the last 2 digits XX I have a book the standard catalogue of smith & Wesson and can look up your serial number range by year

Thanks Scott,

The serial # on the bottom of the handle is 3607XX.

Edit, found the info on S&W site for the History Report.

Thank you.

1962295000
1969786544

So yours was shipped between those dates. Probably closer to 1965 is my guesstimating. A factory letter will given exact date and other information.
That Is a priceless remembrance.

Fantastic, thanks for the info Scott. I will have to get the letter from S&W and some more info on my Grandfather's service dates and come back with more to the story. I have one picture of him on his police Harley on patrol that I absolutely love.

I can't wait to get out to the range and test out the 36. Thanks again.

Your welcome. I still have my model 36 I used as a deputy in the 1970's. I just added crimson trace laser grips as my old timers eyes are not as sharp at night. I look forward to pictures and a range report. Model 36's like 158 grain standard pressure rounds.
