Default 617 Accuacy

What kind of groups are you getting with your 617 and at what distance. Open sights, Red Dot or Scoped.

From a rest, which is a better way of judging the GUN's true accuracy potential than shooting it offhand, both of my no-dashes can put 50 rounds into about 1-1/2" at 15 yards with open sights using hunting ammunition - Federal GameShok 38-grain copper-plated hollow points (Federal's load #712).

To bring the sights into crisp focus, my aging eyes require the use of 3.5x drug store reading glasses but the target then becomes too blurred for accurate shooting beyond 15 yards. I do shoot some groups at 25 yards and there is a defined center to the groups but perhaps half the rounds are not in that core group, mostly due to sighting errors, I believe. Accordingly, my results likely are not as good as someone with younger eyes could obtain.

I have never tried the "good" imported target ammo but I've tried most of the domestic target loads in them as well as my Remington 541-T bolt-action rifles and the Federal load beats them all, for some reason. A close second is the CCI MiniMag 40-grain copper-plated round nose.

I buy both cartridges from MidwayUSA.

My 617-6 likes CCI Mini Mag 40 gr as well as CCI Standard Vel. If this photo comes thru the two 5 shot groups are in the 5/8 to 3/4 in. range. These groups were fired using a Weaver 2x pistol scope at 28 yds. My gun is prone to poor grouping if the barrel gets leaded ahead of the forcing cone. Any unplated HV ammo will lead it up right now. I reamed the FC to 11 degrees and it seemed to help the leading and accuracy.

My 4" 617-1 with stock, open sights yields 1" to 1 1/2" groups at 30' offhand. I mainly shoot CCI MiniMags but am not far off this accuracy with other brands. Extraction varies with different brands more than accuracy does. Wonderful gun.

I have 2 617's no dashes. One a 6" and the other a 4". I shoot them very well but to find out what the guns can do I have my son shoot them off the bench. The 6" will have all 6 shots touching at 25 yards. That is what.......? 1/2" group or so? The 4" is just a little larger at the same distance. I really like them.
