686-4 price check
I know where one is. It will be for sale soon and I've got the first shot at it. It is a seven shot with no lock and the firing pin is mounted on the hammer. I've already got basically the same gun (686-5) but mine is MIM flat hammer without the firing pin located on the hammer and it doesn't have the lock, same with the 686-4 I'm looking at. The question is... what is the 686-4 full lug (not mountain gun) worth in very good original condition without box or docs?

Charlie I'd say $450 if in really good shape. I just picked up this 686-3 at a LGS for $450. The neat thing with the dash 4s is that it should still have forged not MIM trigger and hammer, and no lock. The dash 4s are the last built like this so grab it if you can. Thanks again for the trigger you sold me.

I would be willing to give more for it.
I would say such a gun is worth $550 to 600. 600 if it is a snubby in excellent condition.

Charlie, up here full retail (asking) price would be about $425 for that gun in 6" $450-$475 for a 4". I've not seen enough of the shorter guns sold hereabouts to form a conclusion. Drew

I'll agree with NRA DOC...I would pay $550ish for the described gun if I were in the market so I'd say that's what it would be worth!

It would be $550 - $600 where I am.
New one is $700 with Loc.
I just got a 686-4 with 4" barrel in very clean condition without Box and I figured I had about $550 in it.

Around here the older M686 revolvers with a 4" barrel are going for ~$550.

In my area such a revolver w/ 4" barrel is VG-E condition would be $550-600. In lesser condition it'd still be hard to find it for less than $500. Earlier this year I bought a 4" 66-2 in about 95% condition. It was $440 plus tax (couldn't get out of it). That was the first 66 I've seen in such condition for less than $500. The same shop had a 6" 586-1 that was about 90-95% for $500. They wouldn't budge on the price. It had a fair amount of play in the cylinder at lockup, typical blue wear from being holstered and had very worn S&W target grips.

A lot of people think of the dash 4 as being the best of the L frame line and (if recall correctly) most of those were six shot and the seven round guns are less common. Where I am it would be easily $550.

I have exactly the same gun, 686-4 Plus model, with a 4" barrel. I got it from someone in Florida around 8 years ago for $430. Since then all my Smiths have risen in value at least 25%, I would say.

Charlie I've got a 4" 686-4 and I would not sell it for less than $550 plus shipping-also have a 686-4+ in the 2.5" barrel that I would not sell for less than $650 plus shipping. That is based on new gun prices being around $700 plus tax. Me, I think the -4's are much better guns than the new ones. I bought both new years back for around $430 each OTD.

You don't mention barrel length. By your comparison to a Mountain Gun I guess many inferred it was 4in. If that's the case I don't really know firsthand, but completed Gunbroker auctions would lean towards $550+'ish. Some of prices people advised just seem low to me for a -4, Plus (7 shot) in very good original condition, and make me wonder if they compared it to later versions w/ lock, w/ MIM, only 6 shots, etc.
I recently picked up an excellent condition 686-4 Plus (7 shot), 2 1/2in factory MagnaPorted barrel, Lew Horton distributed, version. When I researched online/forum sales I estimated excellent condition ones at $600 to $750 with some going higher. I paid in the lower end of the range and was satisfied.
