Getting the big 500 in 8 3/8'' tomorrow!
Im going get the big one tomorrow and I can hardly contain myself. Its going to be mainly for hunting and protection when i go back to the northwest, but mostly hunting. I have dreamed of having this revolver to add to my collection for quite a few years now. Any advice you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. This is not my first big bore handgun but my first .500. I bought some hornady 300gr's for it . So what should I expect? I also will be reloading for this so feel free to bring that up. Best thing is my wife is more excited for me than I think I am, what a great woman she knows Ive wanted this for a long time. And is there a group of 500 owners here that i could talk too?

Congrats! I have the 8 3/8" standard and the Performance Center Hunter. Plus, hope to get the Big Horn Armory Model 89 Carbine at the end of the month. This is definitely a handloader's round.
Regards,
Rich

Great guns, enjoy it.
Reloading? Just go to Hodgdon's site, lots of loads including pressure data.
Trail Boss for plinking loads, TiteGroup for something noticeably more but mild, H4227/IMR4227 for some medium heavy loads, LilGun and H110 for max loads.
Most recommend you seat in one step and crimp in a second step. Don

12.5 grains of Unique topped off with a 375 grain hard cast slug make for a rather nice midrange load.. recoils equal to a hot .44 special
oh go heavy on the ear muffs. these things have a nasty bark.. and will have you saying .."what?" for a rather long time

Can't beat an X-frame for conveying a sense of being well equipped to deal with whatever might pop up. These are the perfect revolvers for people who believe that too much of anything is barely enough. I include myself in that category.
I have the 8-3/8" 460 and a 4" 500. Sometimes I think that reversing the barrel lengths might make for a better X-frame combo, but that's for armchair arguments. Either one would be fine for what it does at almost any barrel length. (Except for maybe the 2-3/4" versions; I'm not sure what to think about those.)
Congratulations on the pending acquisition. I predict you will love it.

Sort of the shooters version of the hotrodders comment "Too much horsepower is just about right!". Don

Hold on tight, keep your fingers away from the front of the cylinder, double up on hearing protection, and enjoy!
