Need help with Smith and Wesson Serial number
Hello to all. I have received an old Smith and Wesson 32 long ctg which was passed to me from my grandfather. I have no documentation on the gun and would like to know how old it is and any details the serial number might tell. The serial number is a six digit number on the bottom of the gun between the two sided hand grip. The number is " 582639 ". Any hep would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. The serial indicates a post war made gun. It should have fixed sights and a rounded grip. Serial range 536685 (1946) to 712953 (1960). Enjoy.

Hi SW32longctg,
You have Model .32 Hand Ejector, Improved I frame (because it's an improved version with a coil spring) and it's referred to as a "5 screw" by collectors, #2 in the outline below. Made in the early 1950s, it can have a "1/2 penny" front sight or ramped front sight on a ribbed barrel.
****The Post War I Frame Evolution: .22/32 Kit Gun and Targets, .32 Hand Ejectors, .32 & .38 Reg. Police and .38 Terrier****
1. Transitional: c.1946, leaf spring. .22/32s and .32s beginning as low as 5346XX (1st hammer block at # 536,685), beginning at # 54475 for .38 S&W (1st hammer block same time as other calibers, no known #)
a) Pre war/post war: leaf spring. (includes the non-Model #’d 1957 196 issue .32 Regulation Police Targets in the low #657XXX range)
b) Pure post war: leaf spring. (.32s up to #550XXX highest # known)
2. Improved I: coil main spring. (.32s beginning at #554536, lowest # known)
3. Model of 1953 I Frames: the “Pre-Models” 4 screws & 3 screws. (.22/32s beginning in new serial range starting w/#101); (the .32s beginning at about #614XXX)
4. Model #’d guns c.1957: 22/32 I frames Models 34 & 35 (beginning c. #37XXX), replaced by J frames Oct. 1960 -1 added (c. #70,XXX), the .32s and .38s in 1961 (.32s Models 30 & 31 beginning about c. #650XXX to #712954, highest # known, and .38s Models 32 & 33, -1 added c. #88XXX)

I do believe that serial number is wrong for a 15-3. You need to get the number ( and all letters as well) off the butt of the revolver.....you know...the bottom of the handles.

The Combat Masterpiece I think you are referring to should have a number like 1K24774. These guns were made in the late 1960s into the 1970s, so you might want to post in the S&W Revolvers: 1961 to 1980 section.
