Default Can I make a 686-2 4" into a 40 SW

revolver? Using moon clips of course. I saw the caliber conversion thread on the 61-80 forum and was wondering if this could be done. I think it would make a neat revolver and use 40 rounds that I have for my Glocks as well. Any ideas if this could be done or would it be worth it? Thanks.

I would just convert it to shoot moon clipped .38 specials and .357 magnums. No I would personally leave it just as it is and shoot it.

I would think re-chambering the cylinder would be the easy part. Getting the barrel bored out to .40 caliber would be harder and even more expensive. I can understand the desire to have such a gun but the cost would be prohibitive in my opinion. YMMV!

Anything is possible with a Dremel, a lot of attachments, and enough beer! Honestly, I don't believe there would be any advantage in the conversion, other than ammunition commonality with your Glop; however, IMHO, the .357 Magnum is a much more effective round, and you have the option for shooting .38 Spl, as well. You could always have the cylinder cut for moon clips, if that's what you want. The costs involved with a conversion of this nature would be very high, and you would have a gun with reduced capability and a large decrease in value. I wouldn't do it; however, it is your gun, and YMMV!

You will need a 5 shot cylinder to do it.

Para Ordnance sells a 16 shot 40 S&W double stack style 1911 that shoots like a deam -- at least mine does. 16 beats 6 any day without a reload. And a lot cheaper than the conversion you are thinking about.

It has been done custom in steel, and several failed, ending the idea. The successful .40 L frames ( I have a 646) have titanium cylinders because the steel is just not strong enough in .40 with 6 chambers.
