old snubnose
as i am new to this i would like to thank u and say hi. My question is i have my grandfathers old smith snubnose, it is a large frame with no model number with a 2 inch barrel it does have 45121 stamped on the frame and a serial # 685011 that matches the # on the cyl.My grandfather was also in law enforcement and i think it may be a police model. Can anyone tell me when this was manufactured?

It appears to be a pre WW II Military & Police revolver, probably shipped in the late 1930s-early 1940s.

I concur with earlier responders that you have a pre-WWII Military & Police (M&P) 2" round butt. It's very likely in .38 Special since I don't believe the 32-20 came in a short barrel length.
Here is #673153 that shipped from the factory in February 1939. Your serial number is slightly later but S&W didn't necessarily ship in serial number sequence so yours may have shipped slightly earlier or later but undoubtedly before WWII.
The numbers you found on the crane (which are visible when the cylinder is open) are factory assembly numbers and have no meaning after assembly.
One final comment . . . please return to the 1899 to 1961 Hand Ejector forum with questions like this . . . you'll find all the experts on these early M&Ps hang out there. You may also want to check out a recent post by Doc Watson on a 5" K38 that was special ordered by the ISP back in 1957. (hope you weren't turned-off by SaxonPig's attempt at humor . . . even though he comes across to some as our resident curmudgeon, he's really a helpful guy).
Welcome aboard.
Russ
