Hello S &W addicts. Questions about Mod. 14 & Mod. 629.
I'm new to this site but not new to guns. Have been shooting for + 45 yrs. Ex U.S. Army (69-71). Love out country and the 2nd. amend. I hope to enjoy your company for many years and will attempt to be an asset to this forum.
I recently acquired two S&W's and would appreciate any info. that might tell me what I have and when made.
First is a model 14 (no dash no.) ser. no 3655xx (no letter prefix) 6 in. barrel , serrated wide hammer spur, smooth walnut grips w/ S&W logo medallions, grooved 1/4 in. wide trigger, screw in upper front of trigger guard, right side of trigger guard is reduced in width on front half. No box. Appears NEW and UNFIRED (perfect chambers, no residue under top strap at barrel, no cartridge marks around firing pin, perfect finish, no 'drag' marks around cyl. at index slots), barrel is not pinned and cyl. not rebated.
Second is a mod.629 (no dash no.) ser. no 8741xx (no letter prefix) 8 3/8 in. barrel, std. checkered grips, pinned barrel, rebated cyl.,smooth wide trigger, walnut box w/ logo and 'velvet' lined w/ small metal handle screw driver and shot target w/ S&W logo and ser. no. of gun. I would appreciate any info on these and apologize for the long first post.

Welcome. Glad you are here. You should post your questions about your guns in separate posts in their correct areas to get the best responses.
VP Navy has pointed you in the correct area for the 629, the M-14 belongs in the 1898-1961 area.
Several things about your guns. First, there should be a letter prefix to the serial number. The correct place to locate serial number is the bottom of the grip frame. The numbers in the crane by the model number is an assembly number not the serial number. You might have to remove the grips on those guns in order to see it. The model 14 should start with a K, the 629 depending on it's vintage three alpha's or if old enough just an N. Sometimes the letter seems to far to the left of the rest of the numbers to be included, but it is.
Model 14: While being a 4 screw makes sense for a Model 14 with no dash number, it should have a pinned barrel, being a .38 it will not have a recessed cylinder (Only Magnums).
The trigger guard has been reduced by the former owner. The factory doesn't ship them that way. If that area is the same blue as the rest of the gun, than it is possible the gun has been refinished, which could explain how a 50 year old gun looks unfired.
As to age, 1957-1960 is as close as I can get without a proper serial number.
I am sure if you post the guns in the proper areas (we love pictures), people with much more knowledge than myself will come along to help.
Enjoy the forum.
