Hello Forum Members

Just purchased a model 10-5 (a great pawn shop find). I called Smith and Wesson and found out to my surprise the production date of April 1974. I know little about this handgun. It is my first revolver. I am very pleased with my purchase and would appreciate any trivia or details members may like to share. I uploaded a cell phone photo as an attachment if anyone would like to check it out.

Welcome aboard from the great state of Pennsylvania!
If you are very serious about documenting your new puppy - you can Request a Factory Letter which will research the date of manufacture, first recorded shipment destination, etc.

Welcome from Oregon, and glad to see you have the NRA shield up there too! Great looking gun, maybe you should see if you can get a Tyler grip adapter for it, polished aluminum would look good with the nickel (assuming its nickel, I've been fooled with photos before). Other than that, don't use ammonia based cleaners and don't "hollywood" the cylinder when closing, and you should have a gun that you can enjoy and rely on forever.

It's a great forum, and as I did, you'll learn a lot from fellow members. Mother lode for wheel gun addicts like me.

Thanks for the welcome wishes. The finish is stainless steel 2hawk (I will post better pics later). I have had an opportunity to fire the gun and it has a good, solid, weighty feel to it. I am hooked.

Well, now we need better pix Model 10s are all carbon steel, but some have nickel finishes from the factory. Maybe a model 64? When you open the cylinder the model number is stamped on the frame under the yoke.

If it's factory nickel, then there will be a big N on the back of the cylinder and on the grip frame under the stocks. Let us know, cause if it is really a stainless M10 then you may have an extremely rare gun.

My bet is nickel, it is pretty shiny

I had originally thought it was nickel then I was told it was stainless steel. I will look for the N on the cylinder when I get home then get back to you. It is very shiny I am sure it is a model 10-5 as that is what is stamped on the frame. Thanks for the heads up. I would like to learn all I can. I will send for the factory letter as well.
