Default S&W Model 37.

Thanks for letting me join this very informative forum!
I do have a question concerning my Model 37 airweight that I have just purchased from a private party. After giving me the weapon, I had noticed, looking through a magnifying glass, there seemed to be a hairline crack running from right side the back of the frame behind the cylinder, up to the hammer. Gave back to the guy I purchased from and he said he brought it to a reputable gunsmith who said it was factory test marks. I have not givin the guy any cash as of yet, but want to be sure the gun is safe.
Thanks for any input.
Bob

Welcome from the panhandle of West Virginia.
Could this be another case of mistaking a sideplate seam for a crack?
Pictures would help.

Does your 37 look like this?

If so, that is the side plate seam. Here is a photo of my 63 with the side plate off. This gun was thrown from a moving vehicle and severely battered. S&W fixed it for a reasonable price.

Yeah, that gun's unsafe. You'll need to send it to me for immediate disposal.
Nah, it looks like a side plate seam. Now put the magnifying glass down, take it out and shoot it.

Yes ColbyBruce, that is the exact thing my weapon has. I am now assuming it is normal?

Thanks man, You guys have been very helpful. I feel better about the gun now and will not be sending it to you, but I may leave it to you in my will. Only paid $125 for the thing!

Again, Thank you for the info, very helpful.

Better to be safe than sorry!

Yes sir, that is perfectly normal. Do check inside the frame, under the barrel, for a crack. Some of the alloy frame guns develop a stress crack in that area. A stress crack is not normal.

Welcome from Wisconsin! If you have any further doubts take it to a gunsmith for a thorough check.
