Copper fouling
Greetings all! This is my first post. Thanx for letting me join this fraternity. Forgive an old Vietnam vet as I clumsily learn the protocol & navigation of this platform. The last few months I have been resurrecting a 1903 Mannlicher and a 1927 Mannlicher. Both looked like rusted Brillo pads and both firing pins were packed in Cosmoline "tar". Both are now fully functional but stubborn copper fouling. The web is rife with biased opinions and secret "poultices"; so much so that I am second guessing myself. So I turn to those that are wiser than I and ask "What should I use?" Thanx in advance; your servant.

Welcome home, Brother! And welcome from Wisconsin. I've read a lot about copper fouling on the web myself but since I never experienced it I'm not much help. I saw where some guy wrapped one or two strands of copper scrubbing pad on their barrel swab & used something or another in conjunction. Hoppe's? Breakfree CLP? Something else? That might have been for lead fouling, though.

If it's really bad an Outer's Foul Out, basically you're electroplating the copper from the bore to a steel rod. If you're good with Google there are some home made versions out there. If you're intent on scrubbing: Patch Out, Barnes CR-10, Sweet's 7.62 are all good, I would alternate with a liberal application of JB's Paste. Good luck & welcome aboard.

SEE IF IT'S WORTH FIXING FIRST.
Electrolysis, (google it for a video on how to make one) will remove copper, and a system can be built for app 10$, but BE CAREFUL and keep a constant eye on it while you do it as the solution will remove bluing as it foams up and out of the barrel. If the barrels are severely pitted, it may not be worth spending any more time on them. I'm not sure if/how it might work if ANY cosmoline is still left. A smith could do the electrolysis if you do not want to DIY.

I used a mixture of 10% ammonia and Ivory dish liquid, let it soak, scrubbed it out then followed up with a Kroil/Hoppes mix. Both barrels look good and both rifles perform well at 100 yards. Thank you so much for the help. Your servant

Sweet's 7.62. Follow directions. Repeat as needed. May take days to get it all -- but get it all it will.

another 7 year old thread resurrected but so be it.
Sweets is harsh, very harsh, may remove constituents from the barrel alloy. Leave it a few minutes, patch a few times, then rinse w alcohol, then Ballistol.
Hoppe's benchrest is the same but less harsh. Leave for 10 minutes, then ballistol and all good.
Best to have a bore w/o copper fouling.
