new gun owner
The serial number on my gun is three letters followed by four zeros. This seems odd to me. Any comments would be appreciated.

Howdy from Ohio...good to have you in the house! You'll want to ask your question in the section of the forum that relates to your firearm (semi-auto, revolver, etc). You'll get better traffic thus more insight/answers. Good luck!

Welcome to the Forum.
Later production S&W revolvers had serial numbers as you note. Nothing at all unusual. What model do you have?
You can give us the number and we can tell you the year it was made. You
can x out the last few numbers for privacy.

Welcome from Texas Steve380bg. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.
FWIW, back in the day serial numbers were not unique to a specific gun. I got in a huge argument with a police agency in Oregon, as they had a S&W handgun in NCIC (National Crime Information Computer) with a serial number reported as stolen.
I had located a S&W handgun with the same serial number but it did not match their description, don't remember the details but it was not a complete match. I think they were looking for a four (4) inch barrel and the one I located was a two (2) inch.
They were insisting I seize it and have it destroyed as they no longer had a case. I explained in plain English we did not do things that way in Texas.
I finally called and spoke with Mr. Jinks and he advised the serial number they had reported was possibly on five (5) different models.
Come to finally determine, the handgun I had located had been the back up and off duty side arm of a deputy sheriff for many years prior to the agency listing the number as stolen. The Oregon agency was told (politely) to stick it.
Now each firearm has a unique serial number that utilizes three (3) letters and four (4) numerals.
I hop you find this helpful.
