New Member w/pair of John Ross S&W PC 500s.
Hello, new to the group with a pair of John Ross S&W 500 revolvers (Black). I carry a pair of S&W 325 Thunder Ranch pistols on a daily basis and a S&W 325 NightGuard from time to time. Trying to gather some information on reloading rounds using FF Black Powder or Pyrodex RS for the 500s - For that EOTWAWKI situations. Have a great supply of RS and already do this for the 325s in .45 auto rim. Just don't want to damage my 500s. Any help or direction to reloading information would be appreciated.

Stockpile some smokeless. When your smokeless runs out but you still have primers and BP, fill the case to the base of whatever bullet you use, shoot it, and adjust the sights accordingly.

Welcome to the forum. What makes you think you can damage your JRC 500s with black powder if others have tried to hurt them with modern smokeless powders? After all just how much BP can the S&W 500 cases hold? Evidently you don't have much experience with reloading. I've read of BP shooters filling the complete barrel with it and no problems occured.

Welcome to the forum. I reload but not black powder .My understanding though is black powder needs the ball pushed down hard on the charge so it will not detonate .Not sure how that works in cartridges though .great question though. The guys that do cowboy action shooting can probably shed more light but my understanding which is minimal at best goes like this. You can load BP in any cartridge firearm as long as the case is full and the charge is slightly compressed .That said even in a grid down scenerio I would rather have a good supply of smokeless as BP is very very hard on firearms and clean up time is long .
