New owner, first time shooter
I just felt it was time to learn to defend myself and to learn gun safety. I purchased my firearm the first week of January. I took it to a one-on-one "Women's First" class today. I shot 25 rounds. We spent an hour in class room first, then when a lane opened we went out to the range. It was an indoor range; so ear protection is a must! It is a requirement anyway...I feel a lot better and more able to use my firearm for protection now. I managed to stay center and the first two rings. I never shot outside that; so all-in-all I did well for my first time. I had a woman instructor; NRA certified, so that made me feel really comfortable. Most class rooms have 10-15 participants, and I wanted to stay focused. For me a private session was the way to go. $40 was a great price too. Next I will have the gun cleaning class $25 and then the SDA class $60. I will practice gun safety handling and shooting from here on.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.
Lot's of women getting into the hobby. My husband and I went to the range yesterday, there were 8 shooting stations in the section we were in, and five had women shooters, shooting independently of each other. All of them had good form and were obviously experienced.

Welcome! What firearm did you get? Hopefully you will get enjoyment from it in the future by joining a gun club or range.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I got a M&P Shield 9 mm. I like that it had the extra extended mag for a better grip. Not much recoil either which is a plus! I am told that a lot of woman get a .380 first and the slide is easier but the recoil is worse. I feel I made a good choice.

Welcome to the world of shooting and to S&W forum. This is a great place to learn and talk with those who are experienced. What type of pistol did you purchase? revolver or semi auto? at what distance did you shoot for your first outing?
Have fun and stay safe.

Welcome and great start so far .. Practice as much as you can or can afford and take as many classes as you can .. each instructor is a little different so even though the same subject is taught you may get a different perspective from each instructor ..
Hearing protection is always needed indoors or outside .. I use both ear plugs and ear muffs plus eye protection .. I always wear a hat too ..
Safety is a must with anything you do with a weapon .. get the proper gear for your pistol .. Cleaning kit, holster and gun belt .. all are needed to safely carry your pistol !!
What pistol did you buy ??
Some good videos on YouTube and there are some very bad ones .. so on a rainy evening spend time watching those that interests you .. while your watching you can practice trigger control ..
Always insure your pistol is empty when doing any dry fire practice .. My rule is no ammo in the practice room !!
Enjoy .. shooting is a fun sport beside providing self defense !!

Wow, thank you everyone again for the welcome. I purchased a S&W M&P Shield 9 mm with the ext. mag for extra grip. It shot really well. I am going back again this weekend. My instructor gave me some good practice fundamentals. Always make sure when your practice holding that the clip is empty, check the chamber and so forth...They really teach you a lot in a one-on-one hour plus another hour on the range. A private lesson was well worth the money. We have a murder last night at 12:10 am just 1.2 mile from our house. The police station is another 4 miles from that. You do the math. If you don't have protection at home, help may not come fast enough.

Welcome from Kansas.
Practice and more practice. Never be shy about asking what self defense load you need and practice ammo is usually the cheapest you can find.
It is true that the PD will not be on the spot when you most need them. They show up after the 911 call.
Best wishes for your continues training. Also practice your mental preparedness.
