Default 686

Hello, just joined the Forum. Long time hunter, shooter, and enthusiast!

I live in SW Pennsylvania, as an Insurance Broker.

My first S&W was the M&P 40, full size, back in 2013. Sold it to a friend later that year. Bought a Sig Sauer P229.

I have a M&P 9 Shield, just won at a gun bash in May. Very nice CCW.

Bought a 686-6, 4" last Saturday. Haven't shot it yet. My first revolver, ever!

Several questions about the 686. Great gun, as I have been shooting my friends for past year. He finally broke me down and I picked up a new one for myself.

1) There are 2 black circular spots on frame between cylinder and trigger. They are about 1/8" in diameter. On that 1/2" wide part of frame. Dealer said it was in the finish.
I got it home and tried RemOil, Hoppe's #9, and car polish. Nothing worked to remove marks. What is going to remove spots?

2) There is a clear sheet of plastic film on right side of frame above grip to the cylinder, and down to trigger. Should I remove this? Was this on gun to protect finish before gun was sold? I called S&W CS today and a guy said there is no film on the frame????????????

Thanks for any advice from the Forum.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.

I think your "clear plastic" is the side plate.

Could you post a pic of the spots?

Was the gun purchased new?

If you have been shooting your friends for a year, I'm surprised they are still your friends. OK...enough of that.

You might try some Scotchbrite on the spots.

There isn't any plastic film on S&W revos. That came from somewhere else and should be removed. You may be looking at the line where the frame and sideplate meet.

Congrats on getting a great revolver!

Yep, 686 is brand new. What do you mean by "side plate"??

It looks like a sheet of clear plastic film, only on right side of frame. I have seen this on every 686 in guns shops.

The side plate is a very tight fit cover for the internal parts of the gun. The screws in the side hold it in place. At first glance, it would look like protective plastic.

Since it's new, any bad finish might be fixed under warranty.

Wow!! Thanks for sending that video. I had no idea it was a metal cover. I thought it was a clear plastic film to protect gun until sold to a nut like me. Good thing I didn't try to peel it off frame!!!

Your most welcome. Don't feel bad about mistaking it for a plastic cover, that was my first thought also, when I bought my first gun, a 4" 686+.

Curious about those blemishes to the finish. Try to post a clear photo of it.

If you have any more questions about your 686, you should post them in the appropriate section.

welcome from Ks.

Post pics and do not try to remove anything until our 7 blind men check out your elephant.

If you further damage the finish S^W may not fix. Are those black spots where the lock is? or Was?

I have a "lock" or later model 686 in 4". I really like it. I bought it because I used to own and shoot Pythons. The 686 is that size. It also has the smaller K frame grips. I ended up selling my nickle M-19 Smith as I only need one quality 357 nad the 686 is as easy to carry as it's little brother.

All blacks spots are gone on new 686. Two calls to S&W CS, two different opinions.

First guy said to lightly rub a Scotchbrite pad on spots, but he said I will need to scrub entire gun to blend in. Or send pistol back to S&W to repair. 6-8 week turn around.

Second guy said, " Spots are normal, they are impressions from screws under frame". I thought that was strange. Never saw these marks on any 686.

I did use a green scrub pad with a little car polish. Lightly and gently, rubbed spots. They were instantly gone with no damage to frame.

Today I did the same treatment to the ugly trigger and hammer. Came out pretty good. All black areas are gone! Everything looks silverish, but not like the matte stainless finish on gun though.

I am finally happy!
