Default GA Newbie with a choice to make.

Hello All,
Mike from Georgia and new to the forum. I have already found it to be a great help in identifying the manufacturer date of my Grandfathers old 32 caliber revolver. I couldn't believe it was that old. Now for the choice I have to make. I'm trying to make a choice between a hand gun or an AR and I currently have neither. I'm very interested in knowing which one some of you would purchase first. Not necessarily a specific gun but which platform. At this point either choice will be a S&W. Thanks.

Default And a...

And a Hound Dawg Howdy from SC. That's a tough one. It's easier to find more places to shoot a handgun unless you are one of those lucky people with access to big property.

It also depends on the reason you are shooting. I bought a handgun first for home defense then found out how much I liked shooting and reloading, then I got a bolt action rifle. One thing about a semi with a big clip is that you can go through ammo pretty fast.

Also, there's the expense of ammo. 9mm is pretty cheap nowadays. Revolvers are great to have but ammo for them is more expensive because they aren't produced in the quantities that 9mm is.

If you like the idea of shooting long distances a rifle is tops. Maybe you want to get into scopes and extending even further.

It does me no good to have a sniper rifle, the only ranges available to me are 100 yds. Now if I paid money......

Are you interested in carrying a gun?

The main reasons for having a gun are, target, plinking, hunting, defense and fighting off zombies. There are all kinds of variations to each. Handgun hunting, cowboy action shooting, silhouette., home defense or carry, protection from dangerous critters..all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for the reply rwsmith. You reside in one of my favorite places. I'm actually leaning toward a hand gun for self defense. The AR...I just plain want one.

Get yourself a nice handgun. Then later on, get the AR that you always wanted. And believe me, this gets worse. It's more addictive than smoking.

"I gotta get a new gun.....I GOTTA GET A NEW GUN."

PS: I never really wanted an AR and now I'm looking at them because it seems that everybody should have one.

Welcome from Wisconsin!

I'd definitely get a handgun first. Like it's already been said you can find more places to shoot it & it's a lot easier to conceal for self defense. Although there IS something about an AR...

Welcome from Cincinnati. I agree about getting a handgun first. My first was in 9mm simply because of the lower ammo cost.

Welcome to the forum.

As a targets guy I believe it is important to define your objectives before making your decision.

1. Why do I want a firearm?
2. Where can I use the firearm I purchase?

Make a list, check it twice, make your purchase. The good news is you will have fun either way you choose.

Welcome from the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey.

I would have to agree with the majority, go with a handgun first.

Mike!!!!!!!!! Why choose one over the other? Get one of each. Better yet, get two of each. I started out with one firearm 46 years ago. If i had not limited myself then, I would have twice as many now
