New Member from Illinois
I have a Smith and Wesson 38 special given to me years ago that that i have never fired (given to me by an old neighbor many years ago after her husband passed) and a Remington 870 shotgun that I purchased from Bass Pro Shop about 5 years ago. I have a valid FOID card and want to know more about the Smith and Wesson and am looking for info on it and determine if I need to register it (and how) to stay within the confines of the law. The serial number is 54902. What's my best way to proceed? Thx.

You're fine, I would note the friends name, and his wifes name, if she's still living a note would be nice. If you post a picture of the 38, someone will be happy to tell you what you own.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.
If the revolver is a good, shooter grade 38, you might really enjoy some target practice with it. Post some pictures of it if you can.

Unless you live in Chicago or Cook County, we do not register guns in Illinois, but instead register gun owners (FOID).

As the Retired Chief stated, no need to register your firearm, as you already have an FOID, you are good.

welcome to S&W. glad you are here.
the number (54902) you gave is probably an assembly number taken from the crane area of the revolver...........let us know what the serial number is ...taken from the butt end of the revolver........include any letters with the number...and we can give you some information.....ideally, a picture would help.....
