If the Shield is anything like the .40 Compact then the answer is yes. All that needs to be done on an M&P40C or full size M&P40 is to swap barrels with one in 9MM. Purists may claim that the recoil spring assembly should also be changed although I haven't heard of anyone having problems with the stock RSA. I know after market barrels are available for those two but last time I checked with S&W (it was a while ago) barrels weren't available from the factory. Of course you'd also need 9MM mags to complete the conversion.
Like I implied - I THINK it's possible with a Shield.
