My first S&W
Hello everyone, because of the violence going on in the U.S.,I have bought personal protection a S&W, SV 40. I have had firearms in the past and have not owned a S&W, now I do have one question regarding this firearm and that is the safety, I keep the ammo stored in the clip and I don't keep a bullet in the chamber because I'm not really sure how to engage the safety. If anyone can help me with this information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
Read the owners manual.
Given you got the pistol for personal protection ask yourself "Will I have time to rack the slide before the intruder gets to me?"
I use revolvers for that very reason. I am not comfortable having one of my 1911s racked, round in the chamber and safety on or off so I keep a revolver (loaded) handy.
But it is an individual preference.

Welcome from Cincinnati. As said above, read the owners manual. I'm sure you can also you tube it. You might also benefit from a handgun class.

Welcome from Tennessee. I carry double action revolvers, about as safe as you can get and always ready. Also a good shooting class would be a very good idea.

Welcome from Wisconsin!
I ALWAYS keep a round chambered. I have an M&P40C & a full size M&P40 & they have no safety. I had a Sigma 40VE without a safety. After all those years I never had an accidental discharge. One of the benefits of having a round in the tube besides having the weapon ready to fire immediately is the ability to have an extra round loaded by chambering a round, taking the magazine out & loading another round in it. My 10 round mags now make the pistol able to carry 11 rounds & the 15 round mags 16.
It's imperative that you always keep your finger off of the trigger even if the pistol is "empty". Always make sure while holstering any handgun that there are no obstructions that could possible activate the trigger.
After a while of regular carry all of this will become second nature.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.
I was not familiar with your firearm so I looked at the owners manual online. There is no manually operated safety on your firearm. The concept for that type of operation is that the trigger pull weight is designed to be heavy enough that only a purposeful pull will fire the gun, much like revolvers are designed.
This is a common design and would probably only cause a problem if the pull weight was so heavy that it pulled you off your aim. Beside becoming familiar and comfortable with it, the main "safety" is storing and holstering it with the trigger covered and protected from being accidentally pulled.
Unload it and operate the trigger and you'll feel that it's not easy to accidentally fire it.
One benefit of that design concept is that for self-defense, while your adrenaline is making a mess of your nervous system, all you do is point and pull the trigger, without adding another step to remember.

Welcome to the forum. As you grow more confident and comfortable with your pistol, you will, more than likely, start putting a round in the chamber. Until then, take your time getting acquainted with the gun and try to get some training.

Welcome from Pennsylvania.
The advice above is good. Please consider becoming quite familiar with your new handgun, and there is no shame, only gain, in taking a safety course or two. Build your confidence and your competence.
I carry either a S&W J-frame revolver or a 1911 with a round chambered and safety on. You will become comfortable over time with practice and experience.
Best of luck, and please participate in the forum. Most folks here are quite helpful and willing to provide constructive comment.

Welcome from Texas Acperry65. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.
Add me to the list of those encouraging you to obtain additional training. Check with gun stores, gun ranges, your police or sheriffs office to learn of resources available.
