So I've been shooting off and on in my club's center fire bulls-eye league for the past five years. Most of that time I've been a die-hard 1911 fan, if Saint JMB didn't design it, I didn't want it! Mostly shot my customized single stack STI .45 also have a customized Colt 9mm - both 5". I like big guns, less recoil.

To make a short story long, every match had three groups of people: new shooters with plastic guns (I was once one) and then people who had been there more than 6 months either had a nice 1911 or S&W revolver.

After years of resisting I finally let a few of my revolver inclined buddies talk me into getting one. It is for target shooting between 25' and 50' so I wanted target sights. I also wanted a nice big, heavy gun that is well balanced. I decided on an early 6" 586. After searching gunbroker.com for a while I finally found an early-80s no-dash (ACH02xx) with the factory Patridge sights. It's in good shape, a few handling marks but the action is very smooth. I'm told by some of the people at my club who have shot it they suspect it had a trigger job done.

So far it's been a lot of fun. Getting used to the double action trigger pull hasn't been as difficult as I though it would be. It doesn't like Winchester WB .38 from Wally World, I get light primer strikes - but it shoots UMC fine. I did not care for the wood grips, especially when it was hot and humid and I was sweaty. I put VZ grips on - I run them on all my 1911s. I like them, they're not as aggressive as the G10s I run on my .45 but are quite comfortable and functional.

Now all I have to do is decide if I want to send the gun in for the recall, there is no "M" stamped on it. I want to shoot .357 and it sounds like all they change is the firing pin nose and a bushing... just nervous I'll get it back and they'll have messed with the trigger job if indeed it has one.

586 - No better choice for .357, except maybe a 686

Yeah, hot loads and soft primers makes the primers extrude around the firing pin. I haven't had a problem, so I haven't had mine 'Mnd' I use Winchester, CCI and Remington primers, not Slobbovian 'Extra Extra Soft'.
