Default air travel with a shotgun

Hi All,
I will be flying with a shotgun for the first time and my airline has a maximum overall measurement of 62 inches (L+W+H) for the case. An additional $200 will be charged each way if I'm over. The case I am looking to buy is 63 inches. Anybody have experience in this area?

Also, if I ever want to fly with a rifle, the case would be considerably larger than that. I have had a few people suggest it be mailed UPS, FED EX, or US MAIL.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Hawk

Welcome to the forum. Are you able to break down the shotgun?

Use a breakdown case. If you'll be doing this a lot, many folks like the non-descript cases from Tuff-Pak

Tuffpak 1132 Take Down Case | Nalpak

You put your shotgun in a soft breakdown case, and cushion it with clothing. Since it doesn't look like a typical gun case, the odds of it getting "lost" are less.

Welcome from Texas HAWK1959. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

I would suggest you post your question in the Lounge section. More traffic there and good folks to answer.

I have a plano case designed to be used for an AR style rifle. I have flown using it for my Mossberg 935. I just take off the barrel so that it fits. No extra fees. This also gives the TSA folks extra assurance that the gun is unloaded. Been to Texas and South Dakota, no worries. I can provide the model number, I'll just have to dig it out of the shed.

I strongly recommend shipping your shotgun ahead, fully insured of course, via FedEx or UPS. We've done this on pheasant hunts for years (coming from the east coast) with nary a problem.
