Default Recoil spring

I have a S&W sd40ve that is super hard to break down or slide. It is hard for me much less my wife. It came with a 18# spring. I ordered a stainless steel spring. It came with a plastic spring. I had an option of a 13# spring. Will that work ok.

Welcome aboard. Best advice. Go to The M & P section . Great advice and experience there.

Welcome from Wisconsin!

I'm not too sure I'd go with a light spring. The action might not work properly.

Welcome to the forum. As wingriderz said, go to the M&P section. You might want to call S&W and ask them about using a lighter spring.

Better yet, go to the "SD & Sigma Pistols" forum (where questions about the SD40VE belong).

And welcome aboard!

Default And a....

And a Hound Dawg Howdy from SC!

You can get lighter spring, but that will limit the power of the ammo that you use.

One idea would be to lube it up good and shoot it....A LOT.

Until you get where you can 'slingshot' it open, hold the gun at waist level close to the body pointed straight ahead. Reach over with your left hand and grab the slide on the top. Now PUSH the frame with your right hand forward. It is an easy technique to use until the pistol gets broken in or until you develop hand strength. Or in a case like me, just because it's easier.

The only thing you have to watch out for is covering the ejection port if there is a round or shell ready to eject so that it won't jam.

Many will probably think this is futile, but using the technique above, work the slide repeatedly with the slide hitting the stops at its rearward position. This doesn't cost anything and will compress the spring fully and help get over the initial stiffness as develop the right 'feel' and hand strength to make the job easier.
