Selling Dads gun
Hello. I’m new here. I’m looking for advice. My Dads health issues make it unsafe for him to keep his guns. I have a S&W 38 Special. What is it’s value and how do I sell it? In Florida. See pictures. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Looks like a floating "J" Model 36. Still has the pinned barrel so prob before 1982. 3" barrels are very popular.
The serial number on my floating J is 963J22 and it shipped 3/74.
Guessing somewhere btw $420 and $520 but no expert on guessing value.

I'm no expert on the value either, but welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll get more feedback.

Welcome from Tampa. Hard to pin down a number not being to able closely examine for condition. In the Tampa market probably $400/ 550 to the right buyer. Guns are pretty soft right now.l must be living in a cave. I own several J frames and have been collecting and trading almost 50 years and I’ve never heard of a floating J frame either.

Why is it called a "floating" jay?
It's sharp. Looks almost like a baby Model 10.

The floating J (your Dad's revolver is a J Frame, the smallest size currently made by S&W) just means that the J can occur within the row of digits rather than just first or last in the serial number sequence. On your gun, it obviously between the first three numbers and the last two.

Can the OP sell the gun? Depending on the state, Yes or No. In TX I can sell face to face, with as little check as I want, although if ATF goes looking for it, I'd best know who I sold it to, and have a fair opinion that they can own it. Otherwise there are troubles for me.
I don't know what FL has done to the transfer laws lately. You'll need to check local law / permit rules. I'm sure several members here will know where to refer you.
All that aside, the best price will come from an individual who wants that gun, probably a collector or someone who likes that model / style. Selling through "Consignment" at a gun shop will get about the same money BEFORE they take off a 10-20% commission. So you lose.
Selling it to a gun shop will get no more than 50%, maybe less, of what it it worth. And you lose a lot.

Back to the OP question of can I sell my Dad's gun?
It he gives/sells it to you with something in writing that meets FL requirements or if you have a power of attorney, Yes seems the correct answer.
But let's take the path that he gets better, and wants to know where it went? Or there is a sibling who knows of it, and wants grounds to cause you grief. Both could end in the OP having "stolen" or at least misappropriated someone else's property.

Welcome from Wisconsin!
That looks like a really nice revolver. Nice enough for you to keep as a means to protect your family, LOL.

WELCOME.
Where app in FL? More pics from all angles & you could likely sell it here. FTF sales in FL aren't as restrictive as many other places. Tip: wipe the finger prints off, they can lead to rust. I'm afraid to ask what "wagglers" are, but I think I already have them, YIKES. You picked a good place to ask ?'s, good luck.
