New member Smith 642 Performance Center Cleaning
First handgun and it’s a revolver. 100 rounds through it so far. Quite snappy had a good blister after shooting. Now working on perfecting a nice tight grip. Loving it so far, issue with grips and loose cylinder release so sending back to Smith and Wesson to repair no big deal.

Thank you all. Couple of questions of course
How do I clean carbon from cylinder and frame? Also how’s my barrel looking?

[QUOTE=sean1976;140085596]How do I clean carbon from cylinder and frame?]
For me personally, I use a bronze bristle brush (not a bore brush) on the cylinder face and forcing cone only, nylon brushes everywhere else. I always grab a bunch of toothbrushes when their $1.00 each at the big box stores. "Solvent" almost never, if ever, touches any of my firearms.
When mastered the J-Frame snub is a lot more capable than most think. Congrats on a great choice.

Welcome from Tampa. I have many S&W SS revolvers and I use a cleaning paste named “Mothers” available at Walmart or eBay. You can clean the nastiest cylinder face in a few minutes. It’s fantastic!!

Thank you for the advice. I used the metal bristle brush that came with revolver cleaning kit to clean both barrel and cylinder holes along with CLP, hope that’s ok I’m a bit of a rookie at this right now

I’ve been shooting J frames for 50 years and lose frame screws, especially after 100 + rounds, is pretty normal. The cylinder release screw on my EDC 340PD is lose so I just tighten it and check the others when cleaning.

Use this cloth on those rings on the cylinder face. Keep the cloth stored in the plastic bag to keep the impregnated solvent from drying out. Use only on stainless steel (blued guns don't like it).
