Hi, I Just purchased a S&W 317. have a few questions. The cylinder release seems very hard to operate. I want to change the springs in it , but can't find how to remove the grips. They are rubber grips but have a screw in the side that fits the little tool that comes with it but it turns freely. Any help with that?

And a....
And a Hound Dawg Howdy to you from SC!
The only thing I can tell you is that if the latch doesn't looses up with some use and some oil. You might take off the latch go make sure oil gets where it needs to be.
Unless it's a mechanical defect, sometime preservatives on new guns needs to be clean off, but internally, it's weird to have anything internally gummed up beyond operation.
Grip screws have very tine threads on them. It keeps the shock and vibration from shaking it loose. Keep on unscrewing and maybe you'll see progress.
It's easy to send guns back to the factory and they'll pay for it. Warranty jobs (up til now) are a priority and you get it back in less than 2 weeks. I know that's a pain in the honky but it's the best chance to solve your problem without jeopardizing the warranty.
That's not very 'profession' advice but a new gun shouldn't have that problem and is a good first try before going 'gunnsmith'. Unless you have done internal work before.
Well, glad to have you one board. Somebody will probably come along with more expert device soon.

Whatever tool you're attempting to use to loosen the grip screw is not intended for that purpose. The grip screw on a Model 317, and probably other models as well, requires a 9/32" Hex Wrench, also known as a 9/32" Hex Key, also known as a 9/32" Allen Wrench.

Thanks Dave , you were right. I was foolishly using the key for the lock, and that was wrong. The hex wrench works fine.
