Welcome to the forum.

You might get a better response to your question by posting it in the appropriate section.

I got this 2 1/2" PC 686 as a gift and its fine, but I like the 3" better.

Welcome from Delaware!

I would recommend whatever you get, that you get a 4" version, as your first, especially in the models you listed.

Of the ones you listed, make mine a 686, but of course, almost all of my 686's are pre-lock -4's, but then I've been told I'm a 686 "snob".

Oh, and did I mention that I HIGHLY suggest you go with a 4" version, and not a snub in those models?

I'm totally addicted to the S&W revolvers I own, I especially love the way they shoot, feel and handle so differently and individual by model, frame size and barrel length. I would struggle to pick only 2 or 3 amongst many.

With that said, I wouldn't allow any friend of mine to make newly produced S&W revolvers his first foray in to revolvers.

Buy a few solid used ones, from decades gone by to get started.

I was able to keep all my duty weapons that I really liked.
There also were some that I did not care for.
For instance,my Smith&Wesson 4043.
Terribly heavy, so only carried when in formal uniform with a "Sam Brown" harness bull belt/over shoulder strap. I keep this Stainless pistol in the house. It is HEAVY and actually tames the recoil of this caliber.

Welcome to the forum from Pennsylvania!
To the point at hand: ^^^ What SEVENS said ^^^
And to be more specific, lay your hands on a pre-model 17 K-22.
Once you do, it will be hard to resist and easy to understand.

You didn't mention what your purpose would be and they are all great revolvers. I each of the revolvers which you have on your list. You cant go wrong with any of them. The 9MM ammo is plentiful and relatively inexpensive fast reload with moonclips. But there is just something about the 686 that shooting it makes me smile.

Howdy! Older guy? Older than who?

I'm an old guy and Smith & Wesson revolvers are properly made of blued steel with color case hardened hammers & triggers! You young pups can drool all over the new-fangled stuff while I stick with the real thing!

Best regards.
